Co-founder of the Maincast studio and commentator Vitaly v1lat Volochai dealt with the violation of Ukraine’s law on traveling abroad during martial law by the players of the esports clubs Monte and B8 Esports.
The essence of the disgrace
On May 26, it became known that Ukrainian players representing Monte and B8 were included in the list of athletes by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine who did not return from abroad on time. Athletes from Monte and B8 didn’t return to Ukraine after the end of the European RMR before BLAST.tv Paris Major 2023.
Monte explained the delay of players abroad with the team's successful qualifying to the last major in the history of CS:GO. Immediately after the end of the tournament, the players returned to Ukraine. In the statement, Monte apologized to the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, reminded that the club's athletes were repeatedly reminded of the war in Ukraine and engaged in gatherings supporting the Ukrainian Armed Forces. As for B8, the organization has not made any official statements on this matter.
What does this entail?
Based on the above, Ukrainian athletes from Monte and B8 will most likely not be able to receive permission to travel abroad. Thus, Monte's participation in ESL Pro League Season 18 is significantly questioned. At the time of publication of the material, it is unknown whether Monte is solving the problem.
How does obtaining permission to travel abroad work?
Sports federations or clubs submit applications to the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine to organize the departure of athletes, personnel, journalists, and other employees. Depending on the duration and importance of the competition, the Ministry issues appropriate permits. Usually, these permits apply to a specific event or a series of competitions. The deadlines are established following the competition schedule.
Who is to blame?
As explained by v1lat, if an athlete or team member has to stay abroad for a more extended period, the federation of a specific sport submits a new application to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Then the Ministry turns to the state border service to resolve this situation.
However, to apply for permission, the federation must function adequately, attend to its duties, monitor the athletes, and work actively. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian Esport Federation is not such an organization but only imitates its existence, creating the appearance of active activity.
Nevertheless, in other types of sports, federations successfully solve the issue of athletes going abroad, attracting the support of the Ministry and other relevant organs. They perform their duties efficiently and without problems. It is essential to understand that the need for more functioning and actual work on the part of the Ersport Federation of Ukraine was the reason for the failure to organize the departure of our top athletes abroad.
The federation must be a typical federation that functions, performs specific work, and monitors its athletes and works. Unfortunately, the Ersport Federation of Ukraine is fiction. It pretends to exist and creates the appearance of very active activity occasionally.
But in fact, their only function and task now is to ensure the departure of our top athletes abroad. And they failed this task to zero.
Conclusion
In this situation, it is wrong to accuse Monte and B8 of failure to exit or violation of the law. The responsibility lies on the federation, which did not fulfill its obligations and did not provide support for its athletes.
