It seems that after turning 30, an esports player's career tends to go downhill. Players lose their mechanical precision and their reaction times slow down. However, with years of experience under their belts, some of these players gain an edge over younger competitors, making it seem as though their careers are just beginning after 30.
Snappi (33 years old)
Snappi is considered one of the best captains when it comes to nurturing young talent and elevating their gameplay. In recent years, the Dane has showcased players like hades, Spinx, SunPayus, and NertZ in a new light. Unlike many other captains, Marco doesn't dip much statistically and occasionally delivers outstanding matches.
For years, Snappi worked with young talent but always fell just short of a trophy and recognition. Only this year, the Dane managed to hoist a major trophy above his head for the first time when ENCE won IEM Dallas 2023. Importantly, the organization retained its roster after this success, continuing to show solid gameplay in the new season, leading them to the finals of IEM Cologne 2023.
dupreeh (30 years old)
A five-time major winner, dupreeh is rightly considered a CS:GO legend and one of the best players in its history. Throughout his career, he has played at the highest level, evolving his gameplay over the years from relying heavily on raw aim and quick reflexes to a more strategic style focused on reading opponents and understanding the game dynamics.
He was a crucial part of Vitality, effectively creating space at the beginning of rounds. Naturally, the team's main stars were Spinx and ZywOo, who posted top individual stats, but dupreeh played for the team and his partners. After turning 30, Peter won IEM Rio 2023 and BLAST.tv Paris Major 2023. Although currently on the bench, there's a strong feeling that this isn't the end for the legendary dupreeh.
FalleN (32 years old)
In such a roster, Gabriel must feel right at home: he is the undisputed leader, whose commands are never questioned, and he doesn't need to worry about individual stats since FURIA has those who can rack up numbers. FalleN needs to provide effective cover and back up his teammates. Things haven't been smooth so far; the team needs to adjust and adapt to the more passive style of their new captain.
apEX (30 years old)
Many criticized apEX for taking on the captain's role at a mature age, and that too in a top-tier team. Not everything worked out for the French player, with Vitality often relying on ZywOo's individual gameplay. The additions of dupreeh and Magisk, as well as the team's switch to English (a first for all members), seemed even more risky.
However, the puzzle pieces fell into place with the replacement of misutaaa by Spinx. Vitality won a major and two big tournaments, and the captain's calls led them to numerous victories. Despite his age, which is considered advanced for esports, Dan remains one of the most emotional players, consistently energizing the team during critical moments.
karrigan (33 years old)
After turning 30, karrigan won IEM Katowice 2022, ESL Pro League Season 15, PGL Major Antwerp 2022, IEM Cologne 2022, ESL Pro League Season 17, and Intel Grand Slam Season 4, becoming the oldest major winner in history (32 years and 42 days). In recent years of CS:GO, he has etched his name into the game's pantheon of legends.
The Dane managed to assemble a FaZe roster that has held a top position for over a year and a half, consistently seen as title contenders in every tournament they participate in. The only downside to karrigan's gameplay is his weak individual performance. However, this was never his strong suit; he's always been valued for his leadership qualities.
This group of five players proves that it's always possible to adapt to new circumstances and goals in time. One needs to leverage their strengths effectively to prolong their career at the highest level.
