The International Electronic Sports Federation (IESF) has announced the temporary suspension of the Russian Federation of Electronic Sports from participation in official competitions. This decision was made after the RFES opened offices in the occupied territories of Ukraine, which caused international outrage and complaints from the Ukrainian Federation of Electronic Sports.
After a thorough investigation, the IESF decided to remove the RFES from the list of federations in ‘good standing’, but made an exception to allow Russian players to compete under a neutral flag at the upcoming Esports World Cup 2024. The decision was made in light of the importance of inclusivity in esports and to avoid the politicisation of the sport.
The IESF condemned any actions that lead to war, hatred, and discrimination. The organisation expressed its support for the principles of fairness and respect for national sovereignty, which are the basis of their statutes.
This decision is seen as a compromise that allows for the competitive spirit of the competition to be maintained while ensuring a fair and equal playing field for all participants. The IESF stated that it continues to work to ensure that competitions take place in an atmosphere of respect and competition.
