Chandi Teixeira, the head of gaming and esports in Rio de Janeiro, told Dust2 Brasil that the city is actively working on the possibility of hosting another Counter-Strike 2 Major tournament by the end of 2027. Rio has already hosted one of the last major events of the CS era, and now the city's goal is to bring CS2 Major back to its arena.
Conversations with tournament organizers
According to Teixeira, the city authorities have already started negotiations with all major championship organizers. The main goal of Rio is to host CS2 Major within the next three years. This is an ambitious task set by the city authorities, taking into account the tourism potential and the legacy of the 2016 Olympic Games.
“We are opening negotiations with all the organizers of the championship, and our goal is to host the CS2 Major by 2027,” Teixeira said. He added that Rio de Janeiro has a great tourist attraction and a strong infrastructure that will be a legacy after the Olympic Games.
Olympic legacy and tourism potential
The city has great tourist advantages and numerous arenas, including those used during the Olympics. These factors, as well as a wide network of hotels, make Rio de Janeiro an attractive destination for large-scale esports events. Teixeira explained that each organization has its own priorities and goals, and the city is committed to working with the organizers to achieve common goals.
Additional goals for esports
Chandy Teixeira also outlined other plans for the development of esports in Rio de Janeiro. The main goals include continuing to strengthen the city as a venue for major events, expanding public gaming arenas, integrating esports into the Olympic Villages, and encouraging local tournaments.
“My dream for the next few years is to create a Time Rio team that will represent our city on the international stage,” Teixeira emphasized. According to him, the creation of the team can become a reality thanks to the development of a training base and support for local talent.
Why is it important?
The CS2 Major will be a great achievement for Rio de Janeiro and will draw the world's attention to the Brazilian esports scene. The previous major in Rio was an important event that showed that the city is capable of hosting top-level esports competitions.
