Remake of TES 4: Oblivion Could Unexpectedly Release This April

Reliable gaming industry insider Jeff Grubb has confirmed that the highly anticipated remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion could be released "without any warning" as early as this month, marking a bold and unexpected move to reimagine the predecessor of TES V: Skyrim.

During a live stream of The Power Block by Giant Bomb on April 7, Grubb stated that the remake's release is planned for "any day" and will occur as a so-called 'Shadow drop'—an unexpected release without an announcement. This will be the first time in 32 years that a game from The Elder Scrolls series will break the tradition of prior official presentations.

Grubb's information aligns with numerous sources and speculations pointing to April 2025 as the release month. If true, the Oblivion Remake will be the first major game in the series to launch without a traditional marketing campaign since the debut of The Elder Scrolls: Arena in 1993.

Mentions of the Oblivion remake first emerged in September 2023 after a Microsoft presentation inadvertently became public during the Federal Trade Commission's investigation into the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

In a 2020 document, the project was referred to as a remaster. However, subsequent leaks and reports increasingly suggest that it is indeed a full-fledged remake.

According to available information, the game is being developed by Virtuos, a studio known for its support of series like Dark Souls, Uncharted, and Call of Duty. The remake is reportedly being created on the Unreal Engine 5, though some core systems of the original Gamebryo remain.

Gameplay mechanics, including stamina, stealth, blocking, and archery, have been significantly updated. It is known that elements inspired by Souls-like games have been integrated into the combat system, and the user interface (HUD) has been redesigned for better reception by modern players. As a result, a hybrid experience is expected, preserving the atmosphere of the classic Oblivion, but updated to modern standards.

Platform details have not yet been confirmed, but the game is expected to release on PC and Xbox Series X/S. Considering Microsoft's growing interest in multiplatform releases, the game may eventually appear on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2.

Additionally, trailers for the Oblivion GOTY version have recently disappeared from Steam, which may also indicate preliminary preparation for the release of the updated game.

Despite significant community interest, Bethesda has not officially confirmed the existence of the remake. However, considering several verified sources insisting on an imminent release, fans might soon embark on a journey to the picturesque Cyrodiil—possibly by the end of this month.
