[Exclusive] Interview with ultimate from IEM Katowice: “Now, I feel like a smarter player who makes good decisions”

Liquid player  Roland "ultimate" Tomkowiak evaluated the team's performance at the IEM Katowice 2025 Play-In stage. In an interview with Bo3.gg, he also shared his emotions after the victory over Wildcard Gaming, discussed women’s teams at major events, and assessed the prospects of Team Liquid's future performance.

First of all, congratulations! It was a great game. How do you feel about your performance from 1 to 10?

The first map was a bit rough. We started strong with a 9-3 lead, but they made a comeback in the second half. Luckily, we found a solution in overtime and closed it out. The second map was much more enjoyable—I liked it a lot.

What makes your team unique compared to others?

I think it's the freedom we have. Everyone contributes in different ways, not just the in-game leader. Twist, for example, talks a lot. Each player has their own space to make decisions, and today, it worked out well.

And tomorrow?

Even better.

You’ve made it to the group stage. What’s next—rest or more practice?

I’ll probably practice a bit and then rest as much as possible. If our next game is tomorrow, rest is crucial. If we have two days, we might focus more on practice.

What aspects of your game do you need to improve?

I don’t think there’s anything urgent to fix. I just need to develop over time, gain more experience, attend more tournaments, and learn from other players—their routines, preparation, and playstyle.

You’ve been with Liquid for half a year. How has it changed you?

My approach to the game has evolved. At first, I relied purely on individual skill—just shooting and killing. Now, I feel like a smarter player who makes good decisions. I’ve developed both as a player and as a person.

Last month, there was a lot of discussion about women’s CS. Do you think a women’s team will reach a Tier-1 event this year?

I hope so. It would be great to see, but it’s hard to say for sure.

Should the current map pool be expanded?

I think the number of maps is fine. I just don’t like Train much and hope they replace it, but that’s unlikely.

Why don’t you like Train?

It feels weird to play. I tried it a bit on FACEIT, and I just don’t enjoy it.

In your opinion, what was the most impactful roster shuffle this year?

I haven’t followed all of them closely, but for me, Liquid’s changes were the best.
