League of Legends (LoL), one of the most popular multiplayer online games, has undergone numerous changes since its launch in 2009. One of the key elements of the game is its map — Summoner’s Rift, which continuously evolves, reflecting technical progress and new mechanics. Here's how the map has changed over the years.
1. Original Summoner’s Rift (2009–2014)

At the start of its existence, Summoner’s Rift had a simple and functional design, focused on convenience for newcomers.
Characteristics:
- Simple textures: minimal detailing, emphasis on bright colors.
- Graphics inconsistency: the textures looked outdated even for 2009.
- Lack of detail: the map served its basic function but didn't create a sense of a living world.
Drawbacks:
- Difficulty in orientation due to imperfect visual elements.
- Minimal influence of aesthetics on the gaming experience.
2. First Major Update (2014)

In November 2014, Riot Games completely revamped the map, making it more modern and realistic.
Key changes:
- Graphical update: high-quality textures, improvements to forest areas, monsters, and structures.
- New style: natural shadows, rich colors, realistic forest design.
- Aesthetic change: blue (base) and red (enemy) sides received a unique style for easier orientation.
Outcome: This update received positive feedback as it provided the game with more atmosphere and improved the gameplay experience.

3. Dynamic Map Updates (2019–2020)

Summoner’s Rift received a new level of interactivity with the introduction of the Elemental Drakes system. After the third dragon is killed, the map changed depending on its type.
Types of transformations:
- Infernal Dragon: burns part of the jungle, creating open zones.
- Ocean Dragon: adds vegetation and waterways, creating more bushes.
- Mountain Dragon: forms rock formations, complicating movement.
- Cloud Dragon: increases movement speed in certain areas.
Outcome: These changes added strategic depth and visual diversity to each match.
4. Modern Summoner’s Rift (2021–2024)

Since 2021, the map continues to evolve, incorporating new mechanics and visual updates.
New Dragons:
- Hextech Dragon: added portals for fast travel.
- Chemtech Dragon: introduced new plants scattered across the jungle.

Hyper-realistic Details:
- Living environment: moving plants, waterfalls, interactive shadows.
- Unique animations: dragon effects and landscape adaptation.
Adaptability for Esports:
- Zone clarity: the map became optimized for professional matches.
- Integration of new mechanics, such as portals.
5. Themed Maps

Riot Games experimented with seasonal maps, such as the winter version of Summoner’s Rift. It was popular among players from 2009–2013 but was later discontinued due to technical and balance constraints.
Future of themed maps: Given the popularity of festive updates, there's a chance that themed maps may return in temporary modes.

6. 2024 Changes

With the release of the first and second seasons of Arcane, the Summoner’s Rift map received visual and thematic updates inspired by the series' atmosphere. Arcane provided players with a deeper view of the world of Piltover and Zaun, and these two regions became the source of inspiration for new design elements.
Arcane Style on the Map
Updates inspired by Arcane added a unique aesthetic to Summoner’s Rift, combining the technological advancement of Piltover and the chaotic energy of Zaun.
Key Features:
Piltover Aesthetic:
Architectural elements with clear lines and shiny metals.
Bridges and structures reminiscent of Piltover's engineering achievements.
Decorative mechanisms at bases showcasing the region's advanced technologies.
Light steam effects and gears as part of the background.
Plans for 2025

Summoner’s Rift will continue to evolve and become even more adaptable to themed seasons. In 2025, the map will change three times, with the first change occurring in the 15th season.
15th Season Act 1 Theme: Noxus

- Visual update: dark palette with accents on red and steel colors, inspired by the military style of Noxus.
- Interactive features: new gameplay mechanics related to the aggressive and strategic nature of Noxus.
These changes will add design depth and enhance the atmosphere of Summoner’s Rift, adapting it to modern player demands while preserving the spirit of epic battles.
