Dreamhack leaves Jönköping and the future of the summer festival is in doubt

Dreamhack, one of the biggest cybersport festivals, has been held in Elmia, Jönköping since 2001. Now it has been revealed that Dreamhack Winter will move to Stockholm in 2024, while Dreamhack Summer may not take place at all.

History of the Jönköping Festival

Jönköping, a small town in Småland, has been home to Dreamhack for over 20 years. The festival, which started out as small LAN parties, has grown over time into one of the world's biggest eSports events, attracting thousands of participants and spectators. It was here that the first and fourth CS Major were held, cementing the city's status as an important center of cybersports culture.

The departure of Jönköping and the uncertainty of the future

The publication Jönköping-Posten was the first to report that Dreamhack was leaving Jönköping. The information was taken from an email that Destination Jönköping sent out to local hotels. The email stated that Dreamhack will not be in Jönköping next year, and perhaps Dreamhack Summer will not take place at all.

Furthermore, it is not certain that the summer festival will take place in any other location, either in Sweden or outside of Sweden. Karolina Törnblad, event manager of Destination Jönköping, confirmed this information in a short comment for SVT, adding that Jönköping will no longer be the venue for Dreamhack in the future.

The end of Dreamhack in Jönköping

Dreamhack's departure from Jönköping raises many questions about the future of the festival and its importance to the global cybersports scene. Elmia, which has become a symbol of Dreamhack and a place of historical events, will no longer host participants and spectators. Whether Dreamhack will continue to exist in a different format or location remains an open question. This moment marks the end of an entire era for both the city and the world of cybersport.
