The average number of online players in CS2 fell below one million for the first time in half a year

Counter-Strike 2 continues to lose players — in June, the average number of online players fell to 992,000. This is the first time since January 2025 that the game has failed to stay above the one million mark.

In June, CS2 lost more than 28,000 average active players, and over the past 30 days, this figure has fallen by almost 18,000. This dynamic reinforces the negative trend that began after the April peak, when the game reached an average of over 1.045 million online players. Despite a stable peak of over 1.7 million concurrent players, the average daily number of users is declining.

Why are players leaving the game?

There are several reasons that explain the decline in interest in CS2:

1. Lack of new content. Since the last major patch, there have been no significant updates or changes to the gameplay. Valve is refraining from making announcements, and seasonal interest is gradually fading.

2. Problems with the technical state of the game. Users continue to complain about bugs, poor matchmaking quality, slow servers, and unsatisfactory tickrate. This reduces the quality of the game even for experienced players.

3. Summer, vacations, holidays. Many users simply spend less time at their computers — some are on vacation, some are traveling, and some are spending time outdoors. This is a traditional seasonal decline in activity that is noticeable almost every summer.

4. Account farming. There are jokes online that “of this million, 700,000 are Chinese machines for farming skins.” Although this is an exaggeration, the problem of bots and fake accounts remains relevant — they distort the real statistics of active players.

Should Valve be concerned?

Although the decline looks alarming, the situation is not critical. The peak of over 1.7 million players indicates that interest in the game remains high at certain times. However, Valve should pay attention to the average online numbers and work more actively on content and service improvements, especially ahead of IEM Cologne 2025, which could be a starting point for a new surge in CS2's popularity.
