Astralis’ highly anticipated debut with Casper "cadiaN" Møller at the helm ended in disappointment after a crushing defeat against Vitality at BLAST Premier: Fall Final 2024. Held in Copenhagen, Denmark, this high-profile event marked the beginning of cadiaN's journey as Astralis' in-game leader, but the team could only secure four rounds in the series. Their first map, Inferno, resulted in a historic 0-13 loss – Astralis’ first-ever "dry" defeat, and the series concluded with a 4-13 loss on Dust2. The pressure was high, and this was not the debut Astralis had hoped for, but the team was still smiling and kept a great spirit.
Astralis’ Struggles and cadiaN's Performance
Coming into this match, Astralis had undergone a major shift. cadiaN, a seasoned AWP player, stepped into the role of the in-game leader while giving up the sniper role to Nicolai "dev1ce" Reedtz. However, their showing against Vitality was far from promising. Inferno was a disaster as Astralis failed to secure even a single round, a first for the organization in a competitive match.
cadiaN, transitioning from AWP to rifler, struggled to make an impact. He finished the match with a K/D of 13:26, 38 ADR, and managed only 3:4 in opening duels. He ranked second-worst on the team, just above Victor "Staehr" Staehr, who also had a rough match. The pressure clearly affected the squad, as dev1ce admitted, "We didn’t show up at all... It’s the first time I lost 13-0, and that sucks."
On Dust2, Astralis improved marginally, securing four rounds, but it wasn’t enough to challenge Vitality. Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut and his team easily closed the series, leaving Astralis to regroup after the embarrassing debut.
The Controversial Lead-Up to Astralis’ Debut:
cadiaN’s arrival at Astralis was shrouded in controversy. He joined the team after Astralis secured a "medical emergency" substitution post-roster lock, replacing Alexander "br0" Bro. The decision raised eyebrows, especially when br0’s agent confirmed that the player was in good health. The substitution led to widespread criticism, with the other seven team captains at BLAST protesting the ruling.
Despite the backlash, BLAST allowed cadiaN to take his place in the roster. This created intense pressure for the team’s debut, a pressure that proved overwhelming in the series against Vitality. As Lucas "Bubzkji" Andersen, former pro and current analyst, remarked, “I can’t remember a more hectic start to a new roster.”
I can't remember a more hectic start to a new roster. First the move was mega controversial from the get go due to earlier circumstances and relations. Next it starts a thunderstorm of debate online due to the emergency stand in situation, and a couple days later other teams are grouped together against your team due to the treatment of the situation. THEN you show up for the debut map and lose 13-0. The feelings running through some of the players must have been crazy. I assume it can only go up from here.
Vitality's Dominance:
For Vitality, the match against Astralis served as a perfect bounce-back after their quarterfinal exit at ESL Pro League Season 20. The team looked sharp and relentless, never giving Astralis a chance to get comfortable. On Inferno, Vitality completely shut out Astralis, and ZywOo led the way with a commanding performance.
Their dominant performance also highlighted Astralis’ lack of cohesion and inability to adapt. Vitality's tactical depth and firepower were simply too much for the newly reformed Astralis squad, leaving the Danes scrambling for answers.
The Future for Astralis and cadiaN:
Astralis now faces a challenging path forward. The decision to bring in cadiaN as a rifler and IGL is a bold move, but whether it addresses the team’s underlying issues remains to be seen. There’s also the question of chemistry between cadiaN and his former HEROIC teammates, Martin "stavn" Lund and Jakob "jabbi" Nygaard. Their tumultuous exit from HEROIC left unresolved tensions, and it’s unclear how well they will work together in the long run. We discussed cadiaN's prospects in Astralis in more detail in this article.
As Astralis gears up for upcoming events like IEM Rio 2024 and Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 RMRs, they will need to regroup quickly. cadiaN’s ability to adapt to his new role as a rifler and rebuild trust with his teammates will be crucial if they hope to challenge the top teams in the world. Their next match is today, September 26th, versus Spirit.
