At least two pieces of art were stolen.
The community discovered the similarity of some skins from the new "Revolution" case with the works of other authors.
Currently, the artist Danidem has published information about the M4A4 skins Temukau and AWP | Doodle Lore was stolen from the original authors of the art. Danidem brought a huge number of similar coloring pages and original drawings. The authors are already preparing documents for filing a copyright infringement claim.
What did Danidem find?
In the case of the M4A4 skin, the artist provided more than conclusive evidence of theft. The character from the coloring page is stolen from several drawings one by one, which is not allowed. In the case of AWP, the situation is more interesting.
Danidem found an image very similar to the art shown on the AWP | Doodle Lore skin. The similarity of the drawings is obvious, but they are also very different, so it will be challenging to prove theft.
Theft and inspiration
And in every similar conflict, the question arises: did the author plagiarize someone else's work, or was he inspired by it? In the case of M4A4's skin, everything is obvious about Temukau, and the creator of the skin will not be able to defend himself against the DMCA claim because even details are copied.
At the same time, AWP carried out a clear artistic work or, at least, an adaptation of the drawing. Naturally, this will not affect the opinion of the author of the original art, who feels robbed, but it could also be an inspiration.
What happened to stolen skins earlier?
This is not the first time art theft has occurred in CS:GO. However, this happened for the first time with the Hunter case, in which two stolen art pieces were discovered. M4A4 | Howl and USP-S | Orion was removed from the case and replaced by others. At the same time, M4A4 received the "Contraband" rarity and is the only similar skin in the game. In addition, the coloring pages were changed.
Due to the removal of skins from the case and the addition of the "Contraband" rarity, the prices for these skins have skyrocketed: now, they can be bought for no less than $5,000. Therefore, after this, Valve changed its policy regarding stolen skins.
All such cases were resolved: the skins were changed after a copyright infringement was reported. The same awaits new skins if the theft is proven.
