Sword of the Sea launches August 19 on PS5, available via PlayStation Plus Game Catalog

From the creators of Abzû and The Pathless, Giant Squid returns with a breathtaking new title: Sword of the Sea. Launching August 19, 2025, on PlayStation 5, this atmospheric adventure will be available at no extra cost to PlayStation Plus subscribers via the Game Catalog on day one.

Ride the Hoversword Across a Mythic World

At the heart of Sword of the Sea is a unique movement mechanic, the hoversword. This ancient, powerful board lets players surf across massive waves of sand, performing tricks, catching air off broken ruins, and grinding across massive chains in a world designed for flow and freedom. Inspired by skating and snowboarding classics, Sword of the Sea blends high-speed traversal with elegant, intuitive controls that make movement itself a joy.

Explore a Living, Transforming Landscape

Your character in the game is called Wraith, a figure with a singular mission: to resuscitate a world yielded barren. Within the Necropolis, and beyond, you will learn the art of magic and the world’s forgotten secrets, while working to restore an ocean to a land that is bereft of life. Tremendous amounts of fish, jellyfish, dolphins, and even great orcas that can assist you into your journey pivot a long stretch of arid sand into vibrant underwater ecosystems.

Visual and Musical

Art direction for Giant Squid has never looked better, as the environments are now breathtakingly crafted and will take full advantage of the PS5’s power. Every single moment, be it gliding over the moving sands or cutting through glacial gales, is set within painterly elegance. Alongside the game comes an original score by Austin Wintory, the award-winning composer known for Journey. His music deepens the emotional experience during the Wraith’s journey, transforming the whole adventure into something profoundly meditative that feels spiritual.

Sword of the Sea releases August 19, 2025, exclusively on PS5. Best of all, it’s included with the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog at launch, making it easy for subscribers to dive right in. Whether you’re in it for the movement, the art, or the meditative flow of surfing a world back to life, Sword of the Sea is shaping up to be one of the most captivating games of the year.
