The Resident Evil franchise is taking a bold step into unfamiliar territory with its newest entry — Resident Evil Survival Unit, officially teased at this year’s Anime Expo in Los Angeles. Capcom, in collaboration with JoyCity Corporation, unveiled the upcoming mobile game during the massive anime and gaming convention, surprising long-time fans with a genre twist no one saw coming: real-time strategy.
Set for a full reveal on July 10 at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET via an official YouTube premiere, Resident Evil Survival Unit is headed to iOS and Android, marking the franchise’s return to mobile platforms in an entirely new format. While details remain sparse, Capcom has confirmed that this is not just another zombie shooter, Survival Unit is designed from the ground up as a survival horror strategy game, created to appeal to both Resident Evil veterans and a newer, mobile-first audience.
Capcom’s latest experiment follows the closure of Resident Evil Re:Verse earlier this year, a live-service title that struggled to gain traction. In contrast, Survival Unit has already sparked major buzz, thanks to its unexpected genre and mobile-first approach. Though some fans were disappointed by the platform exclusivity, others see it as an ambitious way to reinvent the franchise and reach a broader demographic.
Initial fan reactions are mixed. While many are intrigued by the idea of controlling squads in real-time across an undead-infested battlefield, others feel skeptical, stating they would prefer to play such a title on console or PC. Nevertheless, the strategic layer could open up compelling gameplay possibilities that push the series into exciting new territory, much like Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 2 Remake did in years prior.
JoyCity, known for games like Gunship Battle and CroSSFIRE: Warzone, is spearheading the development, with Capcom working closely to maintain the lore, tone, and tension fans expect. The collaboration suggests that Survival Unit won’t just wear the Resident Evil skin — it aims to embody the series’ signature atmosphere, now through resource management, tactical combat, and squad survival.
While the announcement focused solely on Survival Unit, the wider Resident Evil universe continues to expand. Summer Game Fest brought us the reveal of Resident Evil Requiem, launching February 2026. Though the trailer spotlighted new FBI character Grace Ashcroft, fan theories and leaks, point to none other than Leon S. Kennedy returning as the real lead.
With a teaser only released so far, more information is coming shortly. Fans can watch the official reveal livestream on July 10, where gameplay, story details, and developer commentary are expected to be revealed. Furthermore, whether Resident Evil Survival Unit becomes a bold misstep or the next sleeper hit, it is clear that Capcom is not afraid to experiment, and this time, it’s tactical horror at your fingertips.
