PlayStation Store Game Prices Are Going Up in Brazil

Sony has increased prices on a range of games in the Brazilian PlayStation Store without any prior notice. The price hike affects both new releases and older titles. The company attributes this move to “challenging market conditions and currency fluctuations.”

What Got More Expensive

Dozens of titles from various publishers have seen price increases. Examples include:

  • WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers — from R$249.50 to R$339.90
  • The Outer Worlds 2 — from R$399.90 to R$455.90
  • Kingdom Come: Deliverance II — from R$349.90 to R$449.90
  • Death Stranding 2: On the Beach — from R$349.90 to R$399.90
  • Ghost of Yotei — Sony’s new first-party title, priced at around R$399.90 (equivalent to $70 USD)

The price hikes apply not only to base games but also to expansions and DLCs.

Sony’s Explanation

Sony cited several reasons for the increases, including the instability of the Brazilian real, high tax burdens, and a broader strategy to standardize pricing across regions. According to the company, these factors create difficult market conditions that require pricing adjustments.

But most players are hesitant to believe this reason. One of the Reddit users mentioned how the dollar is now at its weakest level in over a year. He posited the theory Sony is already increasing the price in anticipation of future rises in the cost of currencies to try to predetermine losses.

Community Reaction

Brazilian gamers are taking to social media and online forums to vent their frustration. Some note that the cost of a single game now equates to nearly a quarter of the country's minimum monthly salary, making digital shopping out of reach for a great many individuals.

In response to the price surge, more users are turning to physical discs, which are often 20–30% cheaper than their digital counterparts in the PlayStation Store. There's also a growing interest in PC gaming, as platforms like Steam and Epic Games Store continue to offer more region-friendly pricing, allowing players to buy games at significantly lower costs.

Sony’s unannounced price increases in Brazil — with new titles now priced around R$400 — have sparked serious backlash, especially against the backdrop of rising living costs and low wages. If this trend continues, it could drive more players toward physical copies, PC gaming, or even unofficial purchasing channels.
