Nintendo has officially revealed new details about the upcoming Switch 2 console, highlighting innovative Joy-Con mouse functionality and smart battery-saving features. The console is set to launch on June 5, 2025.
The Switch 2 will feature upgraded Joy-Con controllers equipped with optical sensors, allowing them to function like a computer mouse. To activate this mode, users simply rotate a Joy-Con 90 degrees and place it on a flat surface. The right analog stick acts as a scroll wheel, enhancing UI and in-game navigation.
This feature has already caught the attention of developers, including XCOM creator Julian Gollop, who sees strong potential for real-time strategy games on the platform. Nintendo is also preparing a title called Drag x Drive, a wheelchair basketball game where each Joy-Con controls one wheel of the virtual chair.
The Switch 2 will offer between 2 to 6.5 hours of battery life depending on usage and game intensity.
To address long-term battery health, Nintendo is introducing a Battery Preservation Mode. This includes a new setting called “Stop Charging at Around 90%”, which halts the charging process once the battery reaches that level.
