Xbox’s gritty, chainsaw-bayonet-swinging shooter Gears of War is getting a full 4K remaster, and for the first time ever, it's heading to PlayStation 5. Titled Gears of War: Reloaded, the remaster drops on August 26, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC, marking a major shift in the franchise’s history.
Once an untouchable Xbox exclusive, Gears of War now joins the growing list of Microsoft titles making the jump to Sony’s console. Following in the footsteps of Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Forza Horizon 5, the franchise’s arrival on PS5 has fans wondering: is Halo next?
This isn’t just a basic port. Gears of War: Reloaded brings fully updated visuals with 4K resolution, 60 FPS gameplay (and up to 120 FPS on supported displays), zero loading screens between campaign levels, and every multiplayer map and mode unlocked from day one, including all previously released DLC.
Originally released in 2006, Gears of War helped define the modern third-person shooter with its brutal cover-based combat and grim, war-torn sci-fi setting. Reloaded takes that legacy and cranks it up, offering visual overhauls that make it feel right at home in 2025’s AAA lineup. Side-by-side comparison shots show sharper character models, reworked lighting, and gorgeously remastered environments that breathe new life into Sera’s devastated landscapes.
Gears of War: Reloaded launches at a budget-friendly $40, but there’s good news for longtime fans: if you previously purchased the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (released on Xbox One in 2015), the new version will be free as an upgrade.
Additionally, Reloaded will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, continuing Microsoft’s commitment to its subscription-first model.
While fans celebrate the surprise remaster, many are still waiting for updates on Gears of War: E-Day, the prequel set 14 years before the original game. So far, Microsoft and developer The Coalition have remained tight-lipped about a release date, but with Reloaded reigniting interest in the franchise, a major reveal could be just around the corner.
