11 bit studios has officially announced Frostpunk 1886 — a full remake of the original 2018 game, being developed on the Unreal Engine 5. The game will feature a new story campaign, improved graphics, new city management mechanics, and full mod support. The release is planned for 2027.
The developers emphasize that Frostpunk 1886 is not just an updated version but a reimagining of the game from the ground up. Players can expect a deeper system of laws, new choice options, expanded story branches, and even more opportunities to make morally complex decisions. Specifically, the new content will explore previously unknown aspects of life in the last city on Earth.
A brief teaser trailer shows the familiar atmosphere — in the frame, we see a generator smoking in a snowy landscape, and a panicked voice echoes: "It’s coming, it’s coming. Protect yourselves, save the children, save the children," it repeats as an unknown threat approaches the city. The visual style immediately sets the tone — dark, unsettling, and ruthless, in the spirit of the original Frostpunk.
The game will also feature mod support — thanks to the switch to Unreal Engine 5, the community will be able to create their own scenarios, mechanics, and visual changes, which will significantly extend the project's lifecycle.
Frostpunk 1886 is being developed alongside Frostpunk 2, which was released in 2024. While the second installment focuses on conflicts between factions in a post-apocalyptic future, the remake takes players back to the origins of the story — to the moment when civilization first began struggling for survival in a world of ice and snow.
The release of Frostpunk 1886 is expected in 2027 for PC and next-gen consoles. More detailed information about the game will be revealed in the coming months. The remake promises to be both a nostalgic return and a fresh experience for new players.
