In a surprising and disappointing twist for mobile gamers, Epic Games has confirmed that Fortnite is unlikely to return to iOS devices in the United Kingdom in 2025 or potentially ever. The developer pointed fingers directly at the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), claiming the regulator is failing to open the mobile app ecosystem to fair competition.
According to Epic, the CMA has deprioritized efforts to introduce alternative app stores on Apple and Google platforms, delaying any real market change until 2026. This comes despite the UK passing a new competition law in May 2024, which was supposed to force tech giants to allow rival storefronts like the Epic Games Store.
Epic praised the EU's Digital Markets Act for enabling alternatives like AltStore and Aptoide, but sharply criticized the CMA for dragging its feet and allowing what Epic calls “malicious compliance” by Apple and Google. The developer argues that unless platform holders are banned from charging access fees and discriminating against external payment systems, real competition will remain out of reach.
This isn't Fortnite’s first battle with iOS. The hit battle royale was banned from Apple devices in the U.S. for nearly five years after Epic bypassed Apple’s 30% cut on in-game purchases. The dispute culminated in a major court decision in May 2025, forcing Apple to revise its App Store terms in the U.S., a ruling that inspired the UK’s own regulatory efforts.
Unfortunately, those efforts now appear stalled, and Epic’s tone suggests little hope for a swift resolution. While a 2026 review may change things, UK players eager to drop into the island on iPhones or iPads will have to wait and possibly wait indefinitely.
