Like its predecessor, exploration is also one of the defining characteristics of Hollow Knight, which its sequel, Silksong, expands upon greatly.  Within Pharloom’s many secrets is perhaps one of the most challenging and enigmatic regions of the game - the Abyss.  Players fortunate enough to advance this far into the game will eventually unlock the Abyss map, but unlike other maps, this one comes with a deadly dive and is a map of the abyss.

Where to Find the Abyss Map

The Abyss map is tucked away near the southern bench within the area. Once Hornet reaches this checkpoint, players should:

1. From the bench, look for an opening above.
2. Jump upward and move slightly left.
3. Claim the Abyss map, which will instantly reveal all previously explored areas of the Abyss on your map screen.

Mooring Abyss has no map until you unlock the inked parts of the map. Thus, you won’t be able to use the map for your first descent because you will have to until you reach the southernmost bench.

How to Escape the Abyss

Once inside, the Abyss is not only perilous but also difficult to leave behind. To escape, Hornet needs specific abilities:

• First, locate the Silk Soar skill, which allows for vertical mobility.
• Continue exploring upward until you spot a locked door on the top-right side of the Abyss.
• Open it using the Needolin skill.
• Beyond the door lies the Super Jump ability, essential for leaving the Abyss.

With Super Jump acquired, backtrack along your original path. This time, new side routes open to the left, eventually leading you to another bench. Rest here, the final stretch of the escape is punishing and may take multiple attempts.

The abyss in Silksong is one of the challenges of the game and certainly the most terrifying and rewarding of them all. Every part of the challenge is designed to test one’s abilities and patience: from the southern Abyss map, unlocking the southwestern bench, and to the guidance from Ballow, and acquiring abilities such as Silk Soar. Although the journey through the abyss might seem much, the plethora of secrets waiting for Hornet alongside the thrill of discovery is the game-changer for Silksong.
