The world of Mortal Shell 2 gives you plenty of freedom to explore, but a sensible mortal shell 2 walkthrough can make the main campaign much easier. The game is built around six Corrupted Gates, with each one leading to a dangerous region and a boss guarding an Ovum. Collecting enough Ovum eventually opens the path to the final area.
This mortal shell 2 progression guide combines a straightforward route through Fainweald and Mammon while pointing out useful Shells, weapons, Beacons, and optional areas worth visiting along the way. You can explore more freely if you want, but the order below helps prevent you from becoming underleveled or missing useful upgrades.

1. Complete the Prologue and Explore Marrow Keep
Players wondering mortal shell 2 what to do first should begin by learning the basic combat mechanics in Disciple's Pass. Practice attacking, blocking, parrying, dodging, and using Beacons while collecting Laterite, Ventrium, and Gloom. After completing the Prologue, explore Marrow Keep and speak with its main NPCs before continuing.
Several important NPCs are located here:
- Zhirelle allows you to strengthen your bond with your Shells and unlock their skills.
- Franz upgrades weapons and eventually helps with Sidearms and Tarstones.
- Merrick sells maps for weapons and Sidearms, along with some Tarstones.
- Milos and Vratko can also be found around the keep.
It's worth upgrading the Shell and weapons you intend to use before leaving.
2. Enter Fainweald and Activate the Widow's Overlook Beacon
The recommended mortal shell 2 area order starts with Fainweald after leaving Marrow Keep. Travel to Widow's Overlook, activate its Beacon, and begin exploring the region while collecting map fragments and useful upgrade materials.

3. Find the Tiel Shell and Map Fragment
From Widow's Overlook, head toward Mushroom Village. Activate the Beacon and collect the nearby map fragment, which appears as a crow on the map.
Your next important pickup is Tiel's Shell. You can find it in an open grave on the southern side of the village.
Tiel is a strong option for the early game thanks to his stealth-oriented playstyle. If you like how the Shell handles, you can continue investing in his abilities throughout your playthrough.
While exploring the village, also look for nearby paths and items before moving toward the first Corrupted Gate.
4. Cleanse the Mushroom Village Gate
The first Corrupted Gate you should tackle is located near Mushroom Village. Before entering, cleanse the corruption at the nearby Beacon to gain access.
The gate leads into the Glutted Mire, where you'll eventually face Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods.
Make your way through the area, defeat Magdalena, and cleanse the Beacon that appears afterward. Doing so allows you to claim the area's Ovum and sends you back to Marrow Keep.
This automatic return is useful rather than something to avoid. Use the opportunity to visit Franz, Zhirelle, and Merrick. Upgrade your equipment, improve your Shell bond, purchase useful maps, and use the Gloom Siphon before heading back out.
After clearing the first gate, you can also explore areas around Fainweald. Heading north can lead you toward Gragu's Shell and the Troubadour's Lute.

5. Activate Blackridge Pass and Reach the Sanguine Caverns
After finishing your business in Marrow Keep, return to Widow's Overlook and head north.
Your next useful checkpoint is the Blackridge Pass Beacon. Activate it before continuing, as the route toward the next Corrupted Gate can be dangerous.
Continue toward the Sanguine Caverns. Don't rush directly to the gate. Fainweald rewards exploration, so collect map fragments, activate Beacons, search dungeons, and gather upgrade materials whenever you have the opportunity.
The additional equipment and upgrades can make the next boss much easier.

6. Cleanse the Stonebled Gate
The second Corrupted Gate is located at the northern end of the Sanguine Caverns. This area is connected to the Stonebled Gate and leads into the Sanguine Caverns' corrupted region.
Enter the gate and work your way through the area until you reach the Lost Child.
Defeat the boss and cleanse the Beacon that appears afterward. You'll receive the area's Ovum and return to Marrow Keep.
Before leaving again, take advantage of the return trip to upgrade your weapons, Shell, Tarstones, and other equipment.
The route through this region can also provide access to Proxima's Shell and the Veteran's Battle Axe, making exploration worthwhile before moving on.
7. Reach the Ruins of Nochte
Once you've cleared the Sanguine Caverns, return to Fainweald for the third Corrupted Gate.
A useful route begins near Widow's Overlook. Head south and use the Bone Gate to reach the western portion of Fainweald.
From there, make your way toward the Ruins of Nochte.
There is also an optional detour worth considering. The Citadel of Penance can be opened using a lever provided by the Bloodcursed Lithopod. The area doesn't directly connect to the Ruins of Nochte, but a Bone Gate through the Desolate Peak provides a route toward the region.
You can also obtain Eredrim's Shell in the Citadel of Penance after defeating the Warden.
8. Cleanse the Nochtean Gate
Continue through the Ruins of Nochte until you reach the third Corrupted Gate and its Beacon.
Enter the corrupted region and make your way through the Prisoner's Domain. At the end, you'll face the Nameless Captive, a powerful enemy wielding a blade on its head.
Defeat the boss and cleanse the Beacon to claim the area's Ovum.
At this point, all three Corrupted Gates in Fainweald have been cleared. You can spend some time exploring the region for anything you skipped, but the main progression now moves toward Mammon.

9. Travel to the Ruins of Mammon
Return to Marrow Keep and head to the upper area using the lift.
The route to Mammon becomes available after dealing with the corruption near the platform used to reach Fainweald. Use the newly accessible platform to travel to the Ruins of Mammon.
Your first priority should be the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon.
Mammon is considerably more dangerous than Fainweald. If ordinary enemies are killing you quickly, that's a good indication that you should return to Fainweald and spend more time exploring.
Upgrade your Shell and weapons, collect additional materials, and improve your Tarstones before pushing deeper into Mammon.
10. Cleanse the Gate of Mammon
There are three Corrupted Gates in Mammon, and they don't have to be completed in a strict order. However, the Gate of Mammon is a convenient first target.
From the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon, follow the roads and bridges toward the western side of the region. Along the way, you can collect another map fragment before reaching a Bone Gate leading toward the Gate of Mammon.
Enter the corrupted region and continue through the Withered Shoals.
The area is ruled by the Hexapod, a six-fingered creature that isn't from this world. Defeat it and cleanse the Beacon afterward to claim the area's Ovum.
Afterward, you can return toward the Lonesome Spire and explore locations such as the High Lord's Keep and the Royal Crypt of Mammon. The latter contains Lazlo's Shell.
11. Cleanse the Gate of Infinity
The next major target is the Corrupted Gate located at the Vestige of Infinity, the large white mountain south of Mammon.
Start from the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon and cross the large bridge known as the Road to Absolution. This leads toward Castigator's Keep.
From the Castigator's Keep area, use the elevator near its Beacon to reach the route toward the Vestige of Infinity.
The elevator also provides access to Proxima's Triarch Repeater, so it's worth checking the surrounding area rather than immediately rushing toward the gate.
Enter the Faded Citadel through the Gate of Infinity and make your way to Isaac, the Scholar-Prince. Defeat him and cleanse the area to obtain another portion of the required Ovum.
The Vestige of Infinity also connects to the Last Steps, where you can find Sariel's Shell, the Clockwork Scythe, and the Caged Hystrix.

12. Cleanse Sester's Gate
The final Corrupted Gate is located in the Revenant Graves.
You can reach this area using one of the two Bone Gates east of the Outskirts of Mammon Beacon. Follow the route toward Sester's Gate and prepare for another difficult dungeon.
Before entering, make sure your equipment is upgraded and that you have enough resources for the fights ahead.
The gate leads to the Conquered Temple, an isolated and dangerous area filled with secrets and challenging encounters.
While exploring, make sure to pick up Sester's Censer. It is required to unlock Genessa's Shell.
At the end of the Conquered Temple, you'll face Droeg, the Conquerer. Defeat him and cleanse the final gate.

13. Unlock the Unfound Path
After cleansing the six Corrupted Gates, you'll have collected the Ovum needed to open the final route.
The requirement is 168 Ovum.
However, depending on how much optional content you've completed, you may reach 168 Ovum before clearing every Corrupted Gate. If that happens, you don't necessarily have to finish every remaining gate before entering the final area.
Return to Marrow Keep once you've met the requirement. A new path will become available in the room containing the Gloom Siphon.
Speak to the NPC there to open the route to the Unfound Path.
14. Defeat Monolith and Malborn Offspring
After entering the Unfound Path, you'll begin the final sequence of the game. The first major encounter is Monolith, found in the Obsidian Vault. Defeat it to continue deeper into the area.
Your next target is the Malborn Offspring, located in Faithful's Shelter. This encounter comes after Monolith and continues the endgame progression toward the final battles.

15. Defeat Orrem, the Reclaimed
Continue through the Unfound Path until you reach the Bridge of Procession, where Orrem, the Reclaimed awaits.
Defeating Orrem takes you one step away from the final confrontation. Make sure your Shell, weapons, Tarstones, and other equipment are fully upgraded before moving onward, as there is still one more boss encounter remaining.
16. Defeat Zmey, the Unbidden
The final boss of the main campaign is Zmey, the Unbidden, found in the Hidden Nave.
This is the last encounter in the recommended progression route. Once Zmey is defeated, you've completed the main story, although you can continue playing on your current save afterward to finish optional content and prepare for NG+.
