Many games are more fun when there are companions to help along the way. This is no different in Assassin's Creed, where in the past, you have been able to recruit hard battled Assassin's to your ranks and help you in the fight against the enemy. This is the same in AC Shadows, you can find companions who have seen better days, and upgrade them into lethal warriors that are at your disposal. There are plenty of allies you can recruit, let's explore how you can upgrade your allies in Assassin's Creed Shadows.
What do allies do in Assassin's Creed Shadows?

While it's very possible to be a lone ranger in AC Shadows, the game encourages you to pick up companions that will help you in the hard fights ahead. AC Shadows is not an easy game by any means. So having companions that can do some of the dirty work for you will make your tasks a lot easier. Essentially when you're in trouble, you can call on your companions to help you out, they will be able to soak up the damage, making it easier for you to kill your targets. Each companion in Assassins' Creed Shadows all have their own unique abilities. These abilities rank from tier one to tier three and need to be upgraded before they can use them.
Let's look at each companion and what their ability is:
- Yaya: Upgrade 1: When joining the fight Yaya's ability will knock down an enemy.
- Yaya: upgrade 2: Yaya will perform a powerful kick that will send enemies flying.
- Gennojo: Upgrade 1: Distracts enemies that are about to attack you.
- Gennojo: Upgrade 2: Civilians will no longer alert the enemies about the crimes they have seen.
- Katsuhime: Upgrade 1: When joining the fight, this companion will throw a dazing bomb.
- Katsuhime: Upgrade 2: Bullets that hit dazed targets will now ricochet to another target.
- Oni-Yuri: Upgrade 1: This companion releases a toxic cloud that poisons people.
- Oni Yuri: Upgrade 2: In the event of an alert, reinforcements are delayed.
- Ibuki: Upgrade 1: This ally pierces the armor of enemies when joining the fight.
- Ibuki: Upgrade 2: Ibuki will use Strike of the Ronin more often.
Let's now take a look at how you can upgrade your companions in AC Shadows.

Upgrading allies in Assassin's Creed Shadows

Once you have acquired your first companion in Assassin's Creed Shadows, you will then have the option to build a Dojo. This is the structure that will allow you to upgrade your allies to have more than their basic ability as listed above. Each companion has two passive upgrades and can only be unlocked once they reach a certain rank. Companions can go from simply an ally, to initiate rank, to veteran rank. Each rank will unlock a new passive skill for that companion. To do this, you must upgrade your Dojo which can be accomplished by spending Mon, the AC Shadows in-game currency.
Here is what each Dojo rank gives you:
- Dojo level 1: Allies can be trained up to initiate rank which will unlock their first skill passive.
- Dojo level 2: You can now have two allies in combat with you at the same time.
- Dojo level 3: Allies can now be trained up to veteran rank, which unlocks their second passive skill.
