Observing in Fortnite can be a useful way to improve your gameplay, learn new strategies, or simply watch the action while waiting for friends. Whether you want to watch friends or random players, this guide will walk you through the basic steps. We will also examine some limitations of this feature and offer helpful tips.
Launch Fortnite and Join the Game Lobby.
First, launch Fortnite and join the lobby as usual. Make sure both you and your friend are online.
Join or Invite Friends to Your Party
To watch a friend's game, you must be in the same party. To do this:
Wait for Your Friend to Start a Match
After joining your friend's party, wait for them to enter the match. You won't be able to start observing until they begin the game.
Select the "Watch" Option
Once your friend joins the match, the option "Watch" will appear next to their name in the lobby or party screen. This usually takes a few seconds after the match starts.
Watch Your Friend's Game
When you are in spectator mode, you can view the match from your friend's perspective or switch between other players they interact with. Use this time to study their movements, decision-making, and tactics.
➤ You can only watch friends if you're in the same party.
➤ If the "Watch" button does not appear, there may be a delay, or you might need to rejoin the party.
➤ Fortnite does not allow you to watch a match that is underway if you weren't in the party from the start.
Watching random players differs and usually occurs in-game after you've been eliminated. Here's how you can do it:
Step 1. Join a Match
First, join a match as usual, whether it's in solo, duo, trio, or squad mode.
Step 2. You Must be Eliminated or Eliminate Yourself
To start observing, you must be eliminated. Either wait until another player eliminates you or eliminate yourself (e.g., jumping from a height or getting caught in the storm).
Step 3. Watch the Remaining Players
After you've been eliminated, Fortnite will automatically switch you to spectator mode. You will initially watch the player who eliminated you, but you can switch between other players as well. Use the arrows (on PC) or L1/R1 buttons (on consoles) to toggle between players in the match.
Important Notes:
➤ You can only watch random players after you've been eliminated.
➤ In some modes, such as competitive matches or time-limited events, the spectator function may have delays or restrictions to prevent unfair advantages.
Limited Time for Watching Random Players
After being eliminated in a solo match, you can only watch for a limited time unless the player you're watching continues a winning streak. In team modes, like duos or squads, you can continue spectating until the entire team is eliminated or the match ends.
Delay in Spectator Mode
In competitive or tournament matches, there may be a delay in spectator mode to prevent cheating or stream sniping. You will still be able to observe, but with a small real-time delay.
Cannot Watch Mid-Match without Joining the Party
You cannot join an already started match to watch friends if you weren't in their party from the beginning. To watch a friend's game, ensure you join their party before the match starts.
Switching Between Players
While watching random players, you can switch between different participants in the match using L1/R1 buttons on the controller or arrows on the PC. This will help you learn from various players' strategies or identify potential cheaters.
Learning Through Observation
Spectating is a great way to learn how other players, especially high-level ones, approach the game. Observe their building strategy, aiming technique, or how they navigate zones. Pay close attention to how they use materials, weapons, and resources to improve your own gameplay.
