Shaders only work in Minecraft Java Edition and do not work for Bedrock. Shaders only work once you have installed some kind of special mod or loader that adds support for shaders. It is also important to remember that they significantly reduce performance, especially on weaker computers.
Installing Shaders Using Iris + Sodium
Iris Shaders combined with Sodium is currently the most modern and efficient way of using shaders with newer versions of Minecraft.
Begin by downloading the official Iris installer and selecting Iris + Sodium during the installation process. The installer will automatically generate a separate profile within the Minecraft Launcher.
Load the game using this profile, go to video settings, click Shader Packs, press Open Shader Packs Folder, download a shader, and place the .ZIP file of the shader in the folder opened just now. Upon the next time you enter the game, the shader will be available to toggle on.
Installing Shaders Using OptiFine
OptiFine mod remains the original and most popular shader installation method.
First, download the OptiFine version for your Minecraft version, then run the installer. There will be a separate profile in the launcher. After launching the game using the OptiFine profile, open the video settings and go to the “Shaders” tab.
Then open the shaderpacks folder then drag the shader's ZIP file into that. The shader is visible in the list now and can be enabled.
Where to Find the shaderpacks Folder
The shaderpacks folder is inside the default Minecraft directory. For Windows users, this folder is inside the .minecraft folder. If the folder does not exist, you can manually create it with the exact name shaderpacks.
Popular Minecraft Shaders
Some of the most popular shaders include BSL Shaders, known for soft lighting and good optimization. Sildur’s Shaders offer several versions for different performance levels. Complementary Shaders are appreciated for their stability and strong compatibility with resource packs. SEUS focuses on maximum realism but requires a powerful computer.
All shaders are installed in ZIP format and do not need to be extracted.
Common Installation Issues
If there is no Shaders option inside the game, either the shader support is not installed or the game was launched with an incorrect profile. Lower frames per second usually happens because shader settings increased or hardware is inferior. If the shader does not appear within the list, check that the shader file is present inside the shaderpacks folder, and that it is compatible with your version of Minecraft.
