One of the best aspects of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is the free character development. While most players are drawn to flashy destruction spells or powerful enchanted artifacts, some adore stealth, which can be enhanced with the Chameleon spell.
This effect from the Illusion guild doesn't grant classic invisibility to the character but significantly complicates the ability of enemies and NPCs to detect you. And if you set up your gear correctly, you can raise this parameter to a full 100%, effectively making yourself a ghost of Cyrodiil.
What is the Chameleon Effect in Oblivion Remastered
Oblivion chameleon vs invisibility
The Chameleon effect is not the same as Invisibility. Invisibility disappears as soon as you interact with the environment. Chameleon, however, has a lasting effect over a certain period. You can open doors, pick locks, attack enemies, and even talk to NPCs without losing the effect—if the percentage is high enough.

At low values, enemies can still spot you, especially if you're not sneaking well or are in bright light. But once you reach Oblivion 100% chameleon spell, detection becomes impossible. Guards can't see you, enemies don't react, and you can rob every store in town without anyone batting an eye. It completely breaks the stealth system—and it's fantastic.
There are several ways to achieve full invisibility, and they can be combined depending on your character's skills and available equipment:
- Enchanted items
- Illusion magic (spell creation)
- Alchemy (Chameleon-effect potions)
Let's examine each method, including tips on how to combine them for consistent, convenient invisibility.

Enchant Items for the Chameleon Effect
The most effective and stable way to get 100% Chameleon is to enchant your gear. You need to wear several items, each providing the Chameleon effect until their sum reaches or exceeds 100%. Ideally, have five items with 20% Chameleon each. This grants full invisibility without the need for potions or spells.

To do this, you'll need access to an enchanting altar. The easiest way is to complete the Mages Guild questline to a certain point and gain access to the Arcane University. Alternatively, if you have the Frostcrag Spire DLC, you can use the enchanting station there (though it's quite costly).
Each enchantment requires a full type of soul gem. To get 20% Chameleon on an item, you need a Grand Soul, captured in a Grand or Black Soul Gem. If you use less powerful souls, you'll have to enchant more items—like 8 items at 14%, which will also give over 100%, though it's less convenient.

Another option is to use Oblivion chameleon sigil stone. You obtain them by closing Oblivion gates, and they can have up to 30% Chameleon. You can't choose which effect you get, but with save reloads or by closing enough gates, you can eventually collect several of these stones to apply the effect to armor or jewelry.

Use Pre-Enchanted Gear
If you don't want to enchant items yourself, there are a few rare items in the game with a built-in Chameleon effect. They usually appear during quests or as random loot in chests, on enemies, etc.
How to get the ring of Khajiit in Oblivion?
One of the most well-known items is the Ring of Khajiit, which provides 35% Chameleon. You can obtain it after completing Meridia's Daedric quest. There's also the Ring of Lordship, obtainable during the Ritual of Dementia quest, offering up to 32% depending on your level. Both rings are great on their own, but especially useful when combined with your own enchantments.

Learn Illusion Magic Spells for the Chameleon Effect
Spells and magic are less reliable for a constant stealth effect, as Chameleon spells only provide a temporary effect. If your Illusion skill reaches level 75, you can create a spell with 100% Chameleon for about 15 seconds. Mana reserves can deplete quickly, but this option is perfect for escaping or stealing if you don't have or don't plan to build entirely around Chameleon-effect armor.

Who sells Chameleon in Oblivion?
A basic Chameleon spell can be purchased in Bravil at the local Mages Guild from Ita Rienus. For 400–600 gold, you'll get a 25% spell—great for training or creating more powerful variations. Requires an Illusion skill of 25+.

Brew Chameleon Potions
Potions are another tool for a temporary Chameleon effect, especially if you don't have access to high-level enchantments or magic. With the right ingredients and a skilled alchemist's equipment, you can brew a potion that provides up to 40% Chameleon for about 2 minutes. Combine two or three such potions with low-level enchantments or spells—and there you have 100%.

But there's a catch—quality ingredients are rare. Bloodgrass is a good starting ingredient. As your Alchemy level increases, new components with the Chameleon effect become available:
- Daedra Silk
- Radish
- Venison
- Columbine Root Pulp
- St. Jahn's Wort Nectar
- Elytra Ichor
- Grummite Eggs
- Mute Screaming Maw
- Screaming Maw
- Wisp Core
The downside of potions is the same as magic and spells—their temporariness. You need to keep track of timers and frequently refresh the effect, which is inconvenient in long dungeons or during infiltrations. But for a short period, it's a good option.
