Emotes are one of the popular features in Fortnite that allow players to express themselves in-game through fun dances, gestures, and taunts. They don't add practicality to the gameplay, but it's a pretty interesting feature that is important for the gaming community.
In this guide, we will explain how to use emotes in Fortnite on PC, consoles (PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch), and mobile devices.
Emotes are actions or animations that your character can perform in Fortnite, including dance moves, gestures, and themed actions reflecting in-game events. Emotes can be unlocked through the Battle Pass, purchased in the Item Shop, or earned during special events.
Emotes in Fortnite can be used for:
Using emotes on PC is very simple, as there is a specific key to access the emote wheel and select the desired action.
Setting Up the Fortnite Emote Wheel:
To customize your emote wheel, go to the "Locker" tab in the Fortnite lobby. From there, you can assign various emotes to the emote wheel by dragging them into the desired slots. You can add up to 6 emotes in total.
If you're playing Fortnite on a console, using emotes is also straightforward and performed by a specific button on the controller.
Platform | Steps |
---|---|
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 |
— Enter a match in Fortnite. — Press the down button on the D-Pad to open the emote wheel. — Use the right stick to scroll through the available emotes. — Select an emote by releasing the right stick on the desired option. |
Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One |
➤ Enter a match in Fortnite. ➤ Press the down button on the D-Pad on your Xbox controller. ➤ Move the right stick to scroll through the emotes on the wheel. ➤ Release the stick to perform the selected emote. |
Nintendo Switch |
▶ Start a match in Fortnite. ▶ Press the down button on the D-Pad to open the emote wheel. ▶ Use the right joystick to choose the desired emote. ▶ Release the joystick to confirm and perform the emote. |
Setting Up Emotes on Consoles:
To set up your emote wheel on consoles, go to the "Locker" tab in the lobby, select the emotes, and drag them into the slots of the emote wheel.
If you're playing Fortnite on mobile devices, you can use emotes via touch. However, due to certain restrictions, Fortnite is unavailable on the App Store for iOS (see our guide on how to bypass this and play Fortnite on iOS), but it's still available for Android through third-party stores.
Setting Up Emotes on Mobile Devices:
Go to the "Locker" in the main menu. Tap and hold an emote slot to change the selected actions.
Use Emotes for Communication
Emotes are a fun form of communication with your team or even opponents. If you're playing in team mode without a microphone, use emotes like "Point It Out" or "Wave" to interact non-verbally with other players.
Sync Dances with Friends
In Creative mode or in the lobby, you can sync your dances with friends for a joint performance. Some emotes, like "Squad Kick," allow synchronized movements when activated by multiple players.
Quickly Use Emotes
You don't need to open the emote wheel every time you want to quickly use a specific action. You can assign your favorite emote to a quick-access slot and activate it instantly.
There are three main ways to unlock emotes in the game:
Battle Pass: Each season of Fortnite includes a Battle Pass, where you can unlock several emotes as you progress through the levels. Many of them are exclusive and time-limited.
Item Shop: Emotes rotate in the Fortnite Item Shop, where they can be purchased with V-Bucks, the in-game currency. Prices for emotes usually range from 200 to 800 V-Bucks.
Special Events: Sometimes Fortnite offers exclusive emotes during in-game events or collaborations, such as partnerships with movies, musicians, sports organizations, or other games.
The rarest Fortnite emote is Fresh. It was last used over 2000 days ago. This is due to legal intricacies related to the emote being similar to the Carlton dance. Therefore, it's unlikely to return anytime soon. Other rare Fortnite emotes include:
