How to Betray Your Faction in Dune: Awakening

You can be a member of either of two factions in Dune: Awakening: that of the Atreides or that of the Harkonnen. However, it's likely that you can change sides and become a member of the other faction. It can only be done once and has serious and irreparable consequences.

How to Betray Your Faction

To initiate the switch, you must travel to Anvil Outpost, located in the Vermillius Gap region. This is a neutral zone where the player can speak to the appropriate NPC:

  • If you serve the Atreides, speak with Lt. Tolliver.
  • If you serve the Harkonnen, speak with Maxim Kazmir.

There are also alternative characters that can assist with betrayal:

  • Piter de Vries helps Atreides players switch to the Harkonnen.
  • Thufir Hawat helps Harkonnen players switch to the Atreides.

However, there are some nuances: for instance, Piter de Vries does not offer the betrayal option to Atreides players with reputation level 2, unlike the NPCs at Anvil Outpost who allow you to start the quest from this level.

What Happens After Betrayal

Changing factions comes with significant consequences. The player:

  • Cannot return to the previous faction.
  • Loses access to its territories.
  • Is automatically removed from all faction-aligned guilds and organizations.
  • Has all faction-related contracts and quests canceled.

However, everything you previously earned — gear, blueprints, and resources — remains with you.

Reputation and Level

To access the betrayal quest in Anvil Outpost, you need at least level 2 reputation with your current faction. After betrayal, your reputation level is transferred to the new faction at the same value. This allows immediate access to relevant gear, contracts, and cosmetics without starting from scratch.

Access to Cosmetic Items

After switching, you will no longer be able to obtain cosmetics exclusive to your former faction. However, some items from the opposing faction are still available through traders in the capital city of your new faction. This enables you to collect part of the exclusive cosmetics from both sides.

The decision to betray your faction is permanent, and comes with the loss of access to former allies and locations. So think carefully about the pros and cons before making your move.
