Mutations are among the most profitable modifiers you can roll in Fish It. They give caught fish a distinct visual effect and multiply their selling price, turning an otherwise ordinary catch into something worth keeping.
Some mutations appear often enough during a normal fishing session, while the rarest have a base rate of just 0.5%. Farming them efficiently takes more than simply equipping the rod with the highest Luck stat — you’ll also need mutation-focused bait, enchants and potions.
What Mutations Do in Fish It
How to get mutations in Fish It
A mutation is a special modifier that can randomly appear on a fish when you catch it. It changes the fish’s appearance and applies a multiplier to its base selling value.
For example, a normal fish worth 10,000 Coins would sell for roughly:
- 22,000 Coins with Stone’s 2.2x multiplier
- 48,000 Coins with Midnight’s 4.8x multiplier
- 65,000 Coins with Galaxy’s 6.5x multiplier
These multipliers become especially valuable when they’re applied to an already expensive Mythic or Secret fish. That’s why mutation farming is generally more profitable in locations with high-value fish pools rather than beginner areas packed with low-value catches.
A fish can only have one main mutation at a time. Attributes such as Shiny or size-based variants may be handled separately by the game, but you normally can’t stack two standard mutations, such as Galaxy and Midnight, on the same fish.
Mutated fish may also be required for quests, index completion, event progression, or collection goals. Before selling a fish with a particularly rare mutation, check whether an NPC is currently asking for that combination.

Event-Only Mutations
Event mutations aren’t part of the standard permanent mutation pool. They’re tied to limited-time islands, currencies, potions, fishing spots, or server events and may become unobtainable once the event ends.

Cupid Mutation
Cupid is linked to the Valentine’s event and Heartfelt Island. During the event, players can fish in the heart-shaped pond to catch Valentine-themed mutated fish and earn event currency.
The event’s Love Potion increases the chance of catching a fish with the Cupid Mutation by 30%. You can buy it from the Florist NPC on Heartfelt Island for 800 Valentine’s Coins while the event shop is active. It has also appeared as a one-time reward in the Valentine’s Battlepass.
Because Cupid is tied to a seasonal event, you can’t farm it through the normal mutation loop while Heartfelt Island and its event systems are inactive.
Admin and Limited-Time Mutation Events
Some mutations or boosted mutation rates may also appear during developer-run or admin events. These windows can be way more profitable than a normal fishing session, especially when a server-wide mutation multiplier is active.
Event mechanics can change between updates, so check the in-game announcement, event timer, and event NPC before burning through your potions. Don’t assume an old event-exclusive mutation is still obtainable after its island disappears.

Best Setup to Farm Mutations in Fish It
The best mutation-farming build prioritizes Mutation Chance first, followed by casting speed and the overall value of the available fish pool.

Best Enchant: Mutation Hunter II
Mutation Hunter II is the safest dedicated enchant for mutation farming, providing a reported +30% Mutation Chance. Mutation Hunter I is the weaker version, offering +10%.
Use Mutation Hunter II when your main goal is collecting mutated fish, completing mutation-related quests, or farming valuable modifiers over a long session.
Highest-Risk Option: Cursed
Cursed has been reported to reduce Luck by 75% while adding 75% Mutation Chance.
That trade-off isn’t ideal for every farming session. You may catch more mutated fish, but the heavy Luck penalty can lower the quality of the fish receiving those mutations. A mutated Common fish is often worth less than an unmutated high-rarity catch.
Cursed works best when:
- You need any mutated fish for a quest.
- You’re farming mutation count rather than rare species.
- The location already has a valuable or restricted fish pool.
- A server event helps offset the Luck loss.
Best Bait: Aether Bait
Aether Bait is one of the strongest accessible options for mutation farming. This is a strong balance of species Luck and direct Mutation Chance. The extra Luck helps you catch more valuable fish, while the mutation bonus improves the chance that those fish receive a modifier.
- 260% Luck
- 15% Mutation Chance
- 5% Shiny Chance
- Cost: 3,700,000 Coins

Rod Choice
High Luck helps you hook more valuable species, but speed also matters. Mutations are rolled across repeated catches, so a rod that completes substantially more catches per hour can outperform a slower rod with only a modest Luck advantage. Use the fastest high-Luck rod you currently own:
- Diamond Rod
- Element Rod
- Ghostfinn Rod
- Ares Rod
- Angler Rod

Recommended Endgame Build
A strong general-purpose setup is:
- Diamond or Element Rod + Mutation Hunter II + Aether Bait + Mutation I Potion
This build keeps high species Luck while adding direct mutation bonuses from multiple sources.
For pure mutation-count farming, Cursed may produce more mutation rolls, but the lost Luck can reduce your total income.

Where and When to Farm Mutations
Fish It mutations can appear on fish caught throughout the game, so the best farming location depends on what you want to get out of the session.

For Maximum Profit
Fish in the highest-value area your rod can handle consistently. The goal isn’t just to catch a mutation—it’s to land that mutation on an expensive fish.
A 6.5x Galaxy modifier is mostly wasted on a cheap Common catch compared with the same mutation on a Mythic or Secret fish.
For Gemstone or Other Quest-Specific Mutations
Use Mutation Hunter II, Aether Bait, and a Mutation Potion, then fish in the area containing the species required by the quest.
A mutation boost won’t help much if you’re fishing in a pool that doesn’t contain the fish the NPC wants.
During Admin Events
Mutation-boosting admin events are usually the best time to use your limited Mutation Potions. Server-wide bonuses can provide far more value than using the same potion during a normal fishing session.

Mutation Potions
Mutation Potions are temporary consumables that increase your chances of catching mutated fish. The standard version is commonly known as the Mutation I Potion.
What Mutation I Does
Mutation I increases your chance of catching a fish with a mutation while the effect is active. It doesn’t guarantee a specific mutation, though, so the result can still range from Stone all the way up to Galaxy.
It is most valuable when combined with:
- Mutation Hunter II
- Aether or Corrupt Bait
- A fast, high-Luck rod
- A profitable late-game fishing pool
- A mutation-boosting server event
