Apex Legends Ranked System and Ladders Explained

There are lots of parts to consider in Apex Legends Ranked: RP, tiers, Ladder, Splits, and seasonal resets. Knowing how they relate to one another is essential, as the game takes RP prior to match loading, and where you finish and how many opponents you eliminate will dictate how much RP you regain.

This guide tries to explain the current Ranked system as best as possible, including how to rank up, scoring mechanics, the Ladders, seasonal resets, rewards, and the anticipated changes to Ranked for the following seasons.

How Apex Legends Ranked Works: The Short Version

The apex legends ranked system has 8 levels: Rookie, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master and Apex Predator. With the exception of Rookie, players need to pay RP for each ranked match. RP is earned through placement, eliminations, and performance based bonuses.

In ranked matches, players lose RP before being able to play. Ranked match outcomes, particularly placement, and eliminations determine how much RP is earned back. This system explains how players will experience loss in ranked matches and how they will climb in ranked matches.

RP Entry Costs by Tier

Your apex legends rp entry cost is determined by the tier you are currently in, not the tier you are trying to reach. A player who is close to promotion still pays the cost of their current tier.

Tier
Entry Cost
Rookie
0 RP
Bronze
10 RP
Silver
20 RP
Gold
38 RP
Platinum
48 RP
Diamond
65 RP
Master / Apex Predator
90 RP

These costs are taken before the match begins.

That distinction matters when calculating whether a game was actually profitable. For example, reaching the Top 10 does not automatically guarantee a positive RP result. Your placement RP, elimination value, and bonuses must collectively cover the entry cost first.

This is also why climbing becomes progressively more demanding. A player in Bronze only risks 10 RP per game, while a Master or Predator player pays 90 RP before every match.

How RP Is Earned: Placement, Kills, and Bonuses

Ranked scoring has three main components: placement, eliminations, and bonuses. The exact numbers can change between Seasons, but these three sources form the foundation of the system.

Placement

Placement is based on where your squad finishes among the teams in the match. The higher you finish, the more RP you receive.

Placement also affects the value of your eliminations. A kill early in a match is worth less than an elimination earned when your team reaches a strong final position. This makes survival an important part of the scoring system even for players who prefer aggressive games.

Eliminations

Kills and assists contribute to your elimination score. A kill or assist counts as one elimination, while a participation can count as half an elimination when your team eliminates an opponent without you dealing damage to that player.

The value of every elimination is affected by your final placement. The further your team gets, the more valuable your kills, assists, and participations become.

There is also a reduction after eight eliminations. Once you go beyond eight, the value of each additional kill, assist, and participation is reduced by half. This prevents extremely high-elimination games from completely overwhelming the placement component of the scoring system.

Bonuses

Bonuses reward performances that the system considers more difficult or consistent.

Eliminating a player who is ranked higher than you can provide an additional bonus. The bonus scales according to the difference between the players' ranks:

  • One tier higher: +15%
  • Two tiers higher: +25%
  • Three tiers higher: +35%
  • Four or more tiers higher: +50%

The placement of your squad still determines the underlying value of the elimination.

There is also a bonus for maintaining a streak of Top 5 finishes. The bonus increases as the streak continues:

  • Second consecutive Top 5: +10 RP
  • Third: +20 RP
  • Fourth: +30 RP
  • Fifth and every consecutive Top 5 after that: +40 RP

Finishing outside the Top 5 breaks the streak.

One common misconception is that support actions automatically contribute to Ranked progression. They do not. Healing and reviving teammates do not award RP; kills, assists, participations, placement, and applicable bonuses determine your score.

All Ranks and Divisions

Apex Legends has eight ranked tiers:

  • Rookie
  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond
  • Master
  • Apex Predator

Rookie through Diamond each have four divisions: IV, III, II, and I. Master does not use the standard four-division structure, while Apex Predator functions as a live leaderboard position rather than a tier with a permanent RP threshold.

Progression requires earning enough RP to move through divisions. The amount needed becomes higher as you reach the upper ranks. EA currently lists 250 RP for Rookie progression, 500 RP through Bronze and Silver, 750 RP through Gold and early Platinum, and up to 1,000 RP for higher Platinum and Diamond promotions.

Rookie is an introductory tier. Once you leave Rookie, you cannot be placed back into it.

Apex Predator works differently. It is not a rank with a fixed number such as "reach 20,000 RP and become Predator." Instead, Apex Predator represents the top 750 players on each platform among the highest-ranked players. Because RP totals continue moving during the split, the Predator cutoff can also move.

Ranked Ladders: the Season 30 Format

The apex legends ranked ladders are shorter, skill-based leaderboards that operate alongside normal Ranked progression. They give players a separate short-term competitive objective without replacing their main rank.

Season 30 extended Ranked Ladders from three days to five days. There are five Ladder periods during the split:

  • Ladder 1: August 11–16, 2026
  • Ladder 2: August 18–23, 2026
  • Ladder 3: August 25–30, 2026
  • Ladder 4: September 1–6, 2026
  • Ladder 5: September 8–13, 2026

Respawn confirmed the five-day format in the Season 30 patch notes.

A Ladder can contain up to 100 players. Players are assigned based on hidden skill, and you need to play at least five Ranked matches during the period to establish your result. Cross-play must also be enabled.

The important part is how the Ladder score is calculated. It is not simply your accumulated RP for the period. Instead, your leaderboard score uses your five best RP scores from Ranked matches during that Ladder.

This gives Ladders a different purpose from normal Ranked tiers. Your tier measures longer-term progression, while a Ladder creates a short competitive cycle inside the current split. A player can therefore fight for a temporary leaderboard position without needing the Ladder to replace the normal RP system.

Ladder vs Split vs Season: What Resets and When

These three terms describe different points on the Ranked calendar. They should not be treated as interchangeable names for a reset.

What it is
What resets
When exactly
Ladder
The temporary Ladder leaderboard and score
Every active five-day Ladder period
Split
Ranked RP and visible rank are partially reset
At the split transition; Season 30 Split 2 closes on September 15, 2026
Season
The full Ranked cycle ends and seasonal rewards are determined
Around November 3, 2026

A Ladder is the shortest competitive cycle. It has its own leaderboard and ends when its active period finishes.

A Split represents roughly half of a Season. Ranked progression receives a partial reset when the split changes, giving players another opportunity to climb.

A Season is the complete competitive cycle. It contains the Ranked progression of both splits, and its conclusion determines the seasonal rewards. EA describes Seasons as roughly three-month periods that coincide with Ranked play.

For Season 30, the Ladder periods end on September 13, the split closes on September 15, and the full Season continues until approximately early November.

Thinking of the system as Ladder → Split → Season makes the timeline much easier to follow. The Ladder is a short leaderboard, the Split is a partial Ranked cycle, and the Season is the complete reward period.

How the Rank Reset Actually Works

The apex legends ranked reset is one of the more confusing parts of the system because there are two useful ways to describe what happens.

The first is the traditional soft-reset explanation. Under this model, a split reset moves players down by roughly six divisions, or around one and a half tiers. That is why a player who finishes around Diamond does not simply remain at Diamond after the reset. The documented reset positions place Diamond players into Platinum and Master-level players into Platinum I.

The second explanation concerns hidden matchmaking skill. EA's current Ranked documentation says that after a reset, players are assigned an initial tier that closely matches their skill based on their hidden Ranked matchmaking rating. For players new to Ranked, the system can instead use hidden skill from Unranked Trios.

This means two players who ended a previous period at the same visible rank can potentially receive different starting positions after the reset. The visible soft-reset rules describe the movement of Ranked progression, while hidden skill is used when establishing where a player should be seeded.

Both explanations are important, and neither should be presented as the only rule.

The practical consequence is simple: the beginning of a new Ranked period can be an attractive time to climb. If your visible rank is pushed down, the RP entry cost also falls with it, meaning you are paying less per game while rebuilding your position.

Ranked Rewards and Why the End of a Season Matters

Ranked rewards are based on the highest rank you achieve during the Season, rather than simply the rank you hold when the Season ends. Your highest achievement can come from either split.

This means reaching a new peak before a reset is still valuable. If you reach Diamond during the first split and later drop to Platinum after the reset, the earlier Diamond achievement remains relevant when the game determines your seasonal Ranked reward.

There is also a distinction between standard and animated badges. If you achieve the same rank in the second split as the rank you achieved in the first, you can receive the animated version of the seasonal reward badge. If you fail to match that rank, the normal version is awarded.

Auras work differently. They represent your current rank during the current Season rather than the highest rank you reached during it.

For that reason, the end of the Season still matters even if you already achieved your target rank earlier. The rank used for the seasonal reward is locked by your highest achievement across the competitive cycle.

Squad Restrictions, Abandon Penalties, and Access

Ranked parties have restrictions designed to prevent large skill gaps and boosting. EA's current official guidance says that players in a premade Ranked squad must be within two ranks of each other. This applies to premade Duos and Trios.

Older guides sometimes describe the restriction as three ranks, but the current official EA documentation specifies two. That is the value players should follow unless the in-game client introduces a newer temporary rule.

When a premade squad enters matchmaking, the highest RP value in the squad is used for matchmaking. EA also notes that matchmaking rules can be changed during temporary tests.

Players should also avoid abandoning Ranked matches. Leaving early can result in an abandon penalty, so quitting a game simply because the opening went badly can have consequences beyond losing the current match.

Access is another consideration for newer players. If you are new to Apex and under Level 20, you must complete Road to Ranked before entering the mode. It consists of three sets of challenges, and all of them must be completed. Players who already had Ranked access before Road to Ranked was introduced retain access.

What Changes in Season 31 and Season 32

Respawn has confirmed that Ranked will continue to evolve after Season 30.

Season 31 is planned to bring further Ranked-related changes, while Season 32 is scheduled to receive a Major Ranked Update. Respawn has specifically said that Ranked will have a new look and feel in Season 32, but detailed mechanics for that overhaul have not yet been announced.

That means future changes should not be presented as confirmed scoring, reset, or Ladder rules until Respawn publishes the relevant details.

For the current system, the easiest way to keep everything straight is to separate the four concepts: RP controls your normal Ranked progression, Ladders provide short competitive leaderboards, Splits create partial resets, and the Season determines your seasonal reward window.
