LEGO Horizon Adventures is very much a retelling of 2017's Horizon Zero Dawn, only done with lots of humor and the typical cooperative action style of LEGO games. In this article, we will be covering if this is a game that's fun to enjoy alone or with a friend in the built-in co-op mode.

Gameplay 

The general gameplay concept of LEGO Horizon Adventures does not differ much from other LEGO games, but there is something worth mentioning. There is a certain Focus device, just like in the main series of Horizon, which could be used by Aloy to expose the weaknesses of machines and take advantage of them during combat. Another peculiar is Gadgets, which appear either in chests or popping up randomly during boss fights.

Overall, the gameplay is enjoyable, and playing with a controller is recommended for a smoother experience. In addition, there is a change from Aloi's costume to certain costumes from Horizon Zero Dawn, LEGO City, LEGO Ninjago, and Amusement.

Story

LEGO Horizon Adventures is, at heart, a retelling of Horizon Zero Dawn, only through the LEGO lens. At its core, it does not dive very deep into the world and origin of Aloy, which it did in the original self-titled game, while the key points of its plot sew together an entertaining, recognizable tale for long-time fans but simple and easy-to-get into for new players.

The story is told through static dialogues with animated scene cutscenes, with the character models moving subtly as they speak. This is a very short game, so keep that in mind.

Graphics and Sound

Visually, the game is stunning, considering it's powered by Unreal Engine 5. Even a LEGO-themed game looks polished. The environments and characters will be well-designed, and instantly recognizable as the original heroes from the Horizon series; this world is vibrant and beautiful.

Combat System, Features Associated with It

In this game, just like in the main series, Aloy uses her bow. Of course, other characters you are allowed to control replace her and add some variety. I have also mentioned Gadgets that help and support Aloy in some ways increase mobility, such as Rush Boots and Blast Boots, while others deal with machines: Hot Dog Cart, and Frost Wave. There's a bit of stealth, too, if you want it, though it's rarely required. You can even enlist the environment in damaging the machines; shooting an arrow through a campfire, for example, will imbue it with a burning effect. 

Summary: Fun, but Short

In other words, LEGO Horizon Adventures is a great experience and, if willing to give it a shot, consider going with a friend. However, it is quite a short game. For Horizon series fans who can still recall the main plot, this LEGO-ish retelling may serve as a light refresher of what happened in the first game. And if your friend's never played Horizon, this might be a good way in. If you don't have a co-op partner, no problem-you can play this solo. 

Final Thoughts 

As mentioned, for fans, this is a great way of revisiting the main events of the first game without getting too deep into the details. For newcomers, well, it might light a spark of interest in the series. Would I recommend it to others? Yes, because it's a pretty decent game for an evening spent with it, taking up no more than 4-5 hours.
