Easter Eggs And Hidden Details In Split Fiction

Hazelight Studios’ Split Fiction is packed with clever Easter eggs and references to classic games, movies, and pop culture. Whether it’s a nod to It Takes Two, anime, or legendary RPGs, the game rewards players who take the time to explore. Here are some of the best hidden details we’ve found, featuring a Dark Souls reference that had me absolutely thrilled.

Dark Souls

As a massive Soulsborne fan, this Easter egg blew me away. Hidden in the Moon Market side story, players can find a small cave containing a campfire with a sword plunged into it, unmistakably resembling Dark Souls’ iconic bonfires.

If that wasn’t enough, interacting with it triggers the message “Moonfire Lit”, a perfect parody of Dark Souls’ legendary checkpoint system. Sit down for a moment, and another message pops up: “Rest here, weary traveler.” It’s a fantastic nod to the Souls series and one of the best gaming references in Split Fiction.

For anyone who has spent countless hours dodging bosses and kindling bonfires in Dark Souls, this moment is pure joy. It’s an unexpected but incredibly satisfying tribute to one of gaming’s most influential franchises.

Portal

One of Split Fiction’s side stories drops players into a twisted game show where they must pass an exploding bomb across an obstacle course. The robotic host overseeing this deadly challenge looks eerily familiar, clearly inspired by Portal’s GLaDOS. While she doesn’t have the same level of passive-aggressive sarcasm, the resemblance is unmistakable.

Akira

It’s practically a rule that any cyberpunk-inspired game with a motorcycle sequence must include a reference to Akira’s legendary bike slide. Split Fiction stays true to this tradition, giving Mio the chance to perform the stylish drift during an intense chase scene.

Assassin’s Creed

Moving onto something a bit less hardcore, the opening prologue of Split Fiction is hiding a very obvious Assassin’s Creed reference. When you get to the top of a tower, Mio and Zoe can jump off of it and into a bale of hay that's waiting at the bottom.

As you do so, a chicken noise will mimic Assassin’s Creed’s signature eagle screech, and Zoe will even reference it being a "leap of faith".

Donkey Kong

In the same level as the Assassin’s Creed reference, Split Fiction pays tribute to Donkey Kong’s arcade origins. While climbing up a construction site, Mio and Zoe must dodge rolling barrels, a clear nod to the classic game where you had to avoid Donkey Kong’s relentless attacks.

The Three Little Pigs

During the Farmlife mission, where Mio and Zoe are transformed into pigs, players can come across a brick house belonging to a smug little pig who claims his home is indestructible. However, if Mio’s pig farts near the back wall, the entire house collapses, referencing the Big Bad Wolf huffing and puffing. To top it off, triggering this Easter egg unlocks an Achievement/Trophy called "Huffing and Puffing."

Halo

In one of Mio’s sci-fi-inspired levels, players are equipped with red and blue armor suits, making them look suspiciously like characters from Halo’s multiplayer mode or even Red vs. Blue. The mission itself involves an intense arena-style battle with energy-based weapons, reinforcing the connection to Bungie’s classic FPS.

Dune

The Legend of the Sandfish mission is a clear homage to Dune’s legendary sandworms. To progress, players must thump the sand to attract the creatures, just like the Fremen’s thumpers summon Shai-Hulud in Dune. What makes this reference even better? You actually get to ride the sandfish, much like how the most skilled Fremen warriors ride sandworms in Dune’s lore.

Split Fiction is filled with clever Easter eggs that reward players for exploring its vibrant world. From legendary RPG callbacks to anime homages, there’s no shortage of fun details to uncover. But as a Souls fan, nothing beats the satisfaction of finding a bonfire hidden in the game’s depths. Did you spot any other hidden references? Let us know!
