Version 1.20 of Minecraft and later added a feature popularly known as Armor Trims that enables the player to customize the appearance of their armor with the use of Armor Trim Templates, which change the shape of the armor trim. Because they are rare and consumed by use and thus harder to obtain, there is a method in-game for duplicating them.
What Is an Armor Trim Template
An Armor Trim Template is a special item used together with a piece of armor and a coloring material at a Smithing Table. After application, the template is consumed and the armor receives a decorative pattern.
Templates can be found in various world structures, including temple chests, fortresses, ancient cities, shipwrecks, and other generated structures. Each type of template has its own unique design.
Why Duplicate Armor Trims
Duplication allows players to:
- preserve rare templates and use them multiple times;
- create matching armor sets;
- experiment with different trim materials without the risk of losing the original template.
This mechanic is an official part of the game and is not considered a bug or exploit.

How to Duplicate an Armor Trim Template

To duplicate a template, you must use a Crafting Table.
Required items:
- 1 Armor Trim Template to copy;
- 7 diamonds;
- 1 additional block corresponding to the template type.
In the crafting grid, place the template together with the diamonds and the required block. If the recipe is arranged correctly, the result will be two identical Armor Trim Templates.
This way, one template produces an extra copy without losing the original.
Blocks Required for Different Templates
Each Armor Trim type requires a specific block:
- Coast, Sentry, Vex — Cobblestone
- Dune — Sandstone
- Wild — Mossy Cobblestone
- Ward, Silence — Cobbled Deepslate
- Rib — Netherrack
- Snout — Blackstone
- Spire — Purpur Block
- Eye — End Stone
- Tide — Prismarine
- Bolt — Copper Block or Waxed Copper
- Wayfinder, Host, Raiser, Shaper — Terracotta
This block determines which template will be duplicated.

Cost and Practicality of Duplication
The duplication process is quite expensive, as it requires seven diamonds for each copy. However, this cost is justified for rare templates that are difficult to find again. By making copies in advance, players can safely use them for decorating armor.

How to Apply an Armor Trim
To use a template, open a Smithing Table and insert:
- an Armor Trim Template;
- a piece of armor;
- a material for coloring (iron, gold, diamond, emerald, lapis lazuli, amethyst, and others).
After this, the armor will receive a decorative pattern, and the template will be consumed.
Although the process requires significant resources, it offers wide possibilities for customizing equipment and creating a unique character appearance.
