In the midst of PGL Major Copenhagen 2024, a controversy arose over the participation of Russian players in it. Denmark's Minister of Culture, Jakob Engel-Schmidt, issued a strong statement calling for the exclusion of Russians from all international sporting events, including e-sports.
Jakob Engel-Schmidt focused on the PGL Major, which takes place in Denmark. He also appealed to the management of the Royal Arena, where the playoff matches will be held, with a request not to allow Russian players to participate.
As long as Russia continues its illegal war of aggression in Ukraine, I do not believe Russian athletes should be allowed to participate in international sports. This, of course, also applies to eSports. Even if it is a Romanian organizer, I would still like to call for the exclusion of Russian participation. I also urge the Royal Arena management to be more critical of what is being done at their location.
While people in Ukraine are dying every day from Russian shelling, Russian players continue to participate in competitions at the international level, which is considered unacceptable in the 21st century. E-sports and computer games are great, but Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine cannot be ignored.
At the time of publication of the material, PGL and representatives of the Royal Arena did not comment on the situation. 18 Russian players continue to compete at the major.
PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 takes place from March 17 to 31 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The teams are competing for a prize fund of $1.25 million. The schedule and results of the tournament can be followed by following the link.
