Monte's departure denied: The Ukrainian community speaks out

Monte, the cherished Ukrainian CS2 team, has faced an unexpected barrier, missing out on IEM Chengdu 2024 due to travel complications from Ukraine to China. This development has resonated deeply within the Ukrainian community and beyond, prompting a vocal response from both fans and key esports figures.

Ivan Shevtsov, better known as Johnta, the esports coach for FENNEL team(VALORANT), took to social media to elucidate the situation, emphasizing the impact of the ongoing conflict.

"Because of Russian aggression on Ukraine, we have martial law, so it's hard for Ukrainians to get permission to leave the country. While Russians, who represent aggressors, can easily travel and take part in events. This is a reality we live in. An unfair reality where a victim suffers even more and the aggressor is not punished"
he expressed, voicing a stark reality.

The sentiments of frustration and the aspiration to return to top-tier tournaments were echoed by Denys 'dance' Yashniev — Director of Monte Esports.

"So sad to miss such a big event after 2 years break of CS in China. Hope to come back for Shanghai Major!"

The situation was further highlighted by Oleksandr petr1k Petryk, who lamented the missed chance for the Ukrainian flag to be represented in China.

"The most rooted Ukrainian esports team couldn't cross the Ukrainian border to attend the top tournament. The guys always deliver the right messages; it would have had a special significance in China."

Amid the disappointment, there was a sliver of support for Steel Helmet, the Chinese streamer team, to take Monte's place. The community recognized the unique opportunity for Steel Helmet to compete, with one comment stating,

"What a pity, though steel helmet is probably the most welcomed team in China as a 5-streamers team."

A fan's statement on social media encapsulates the frustration and sorrow felt by many:

"True. Sadly this is how the world is. Russia can represent their country while their army, missiles, etc., destroy Ukraine — kill, rape, steal. Russian players can play CS and bring money to the Russian economy for new missiles. Amazing."

A potent opinion shared across social media challenges the value of competing in "obscure tournaments" to garner ratings and achievements.

In fact, the fact that Monte wasn't allowed to go abroad is the right thing to do! Why the hell should they go to these obscure tournaments from some ESL and raise their rating and some kind of achievements? What good is that? Real benefit should be brought. Like Ivan Danishevsky, the Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Esports Federation, who brings benefits to New York, Poland, Italy, and other countries. Like Denis Davydov, (coach) Chairman of the Commission of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine on esports. Like Eduard Anokhin, the COO of the esports federation. They have no problems with traveling. They benefit Ukrainian esports, not that the quality is Monte

As fans continue to offer words of encouragement, the overwhelming sentiment remains one of solidarity with Monte. The team's absence at IEM Chengdu 2024 is deeply felt, and the community's hope to see them in Shanghai is a testament to their unwavering spirit.
