Counter-Strike is one of the most popular cyber sports disciplines, and even after decades it continues to win the hearts of players around the world. But what makes this game so appealing to fans? CS 1.6 and CS legend Christopher “GeT_RiGhT” Alesund recently shared his opinion on the subject in an interview with Dot Esports.
GeT_RiGhT believes that the secret of Counter-Strike's success lies in the simplicity and accessibility of the game. According to him, even a person far from games can understand and appreciate it, just by watching one of the games. “CS is basically a living organ. It is so simple and easy to understand. A person who doesn't like games will understand it after watching half a game,” GeT_RiGhT said at IEM Cologne 2024.
Comparison to soccer
In his interview, the Swedish player also drew parallels between Counter-Strike and soccer. He noted that both disciplines are understandable and appealing to viewers, regardless of their experience in the game. “If you want to go deeper, of course you can. But it's not like a MOBA game where you have to buy this item to build something and so on. It's a more advanced game for casual viewers. But CS is basically like soccer. Even if you don't like it, you understand it,” Alesund noted.
The future of Counter-Strike
In addition, GeT_RiGhT shared his vision for the future of Counter-Strike. He expressed his hope that the game will retain its unique atmosphere and dedication from the community. “What I want to keep the same is the dedication, and the love for the game that many of us have. There are so many players who haven't touched the game for a long time, but they're still here, CS still exists, and everyone is still interested in it,” the Swede concluded.
Thus, GeT_RiGhT emphasized that it is the simplicity and understandability of Counter-Strike that makes it unique and attractive to a wide audience. And his comparison to soccer only confirms how deeply rooted this game is in the hearts of cybersports fans.
