Brazil establishes Cybersport Council to develop and regulate electronic games

Brazil is taking an important step in the development of cybersports with the creation of the Cybersports Council. The national government has decided to authorize the creation of this office, which will report to the National Secretariat of Sports Betting and Sports Economic Development. The importance of this development is that cybersport is recognized internationally and its development in Brazil can open new opportunities for the economy and society.

The history of the creation of the Cybersport Council dates back to last September, when Minister André Fufuca first talked about the need for such a unit in the Ministry of Sports. A lot of time has passed since then, but the attention to this issue has not waned. The minister and the president have always emphasized the importance of cybersports and the need to regulate it. This could mean that various major Counter-Strike 2 tournaments could appear in Brazil, either as a venue or from local organizers.

On the 11th, President Lula (PT/SP) approved the creation of the National Sports Betting and Sports Economic Development Secretariat. The new sports directorate will be responsible for developing guidelines and policies to improve the e-gaming and competition environment, as well as analyzing impacts and risks to implement mechanisms to promote the fundamental principles of sports and prevent negative impacts. The council will also coordinate partnerships with public and private bodies to promote e-gaming in line with other government policies.

Minister André Fufuca told the Dust2 Brasil portal the importance of regulating cybersports, emphasizing that three out of four people in Brazil play video games and the country cannot ignore a market worth $200 billion a year. Businessman Eduardo Gomes de Almeida Araújo, known as Dudo Menor, is expected to head the new Council. His candidacy has the confidence of the minister and he is already actively involved in activities related to the development of cybersports in Brazil.

The next major tournament in Brazil will be IEM Rio 2024 in October, with IEM Rio 2023 and IEM Rio Major 2022 also previously being major tournaments. If you count A-team tournaments based on our site's rankings, the last one was Global Esports Tour Rio 2024. Maybe with the emergence of this Cybersport Council in Brazil, there will be more tournaments in this region.

Thus, the creation of the Cybersport Council is an important step in the development of this sector in Brazil, which can lead to significant economic and social changes, as well as many CS2 tournaments, which is a plus for us as spectators. It also emphasizes the growing importance of cybersport and the need to integrate it into government structures for better management and development.
