The Belgian company Unlocked is wrapping up its five-year history in the Benelux EMEA Regional League. In 2025, they decided not to renew the license for organizing the Elite Series: League of Legends. Although Riot Games were interested in continuing the partnership, both parties were unable to reach a financially beneficial agreement.
Additional sources report that Unlocked has dismissed a significant portion of its staff and is currently seeking opportunities to merge with another company. The final chapter of their history will conclude at the end of the Benelux Masters.
The Historical Journey of Benelux
The Benelux region started its development back in 2018 under the leadership of Gamers First in the format of the Benelux Premier League. Later, in 2020, Unlocked (formerly META) took over the license and renamed the league to the Elite Series. The region aimed to reach the level of the leading ERLs, and over several years, the format went through several significant changes. However, facing financial struggles, Unlocked closed its Rocket League, VALORANT, and Counter-Strike divisions earlier this year. Their last major esports activity will end with their departure from League of Legends.
Riot Games' Reaction
Following Unlocked's departure, the future of Benelux League of Legends remains in question. Riot Games have expressed their commitment to the region and are looking for a new organizer to continue the tournaments. A company representative stated:
"We confirm that we are ending our partnership with Unlocked, the current organizer of The Elite Series League of Legends (ESLOL), starting in 2025. We are committed to continuing to provide a competitive experience for players and teams in the region and are seeking new solutions for the next season. Additional information will be provided in the future."
Reasons for the Closure
Despite the absence of official comments from Unlocked, in a letter to the teams, the company's director explained the reasons behind the league's closure. In 2024, they already attempted to optimize expenses, but the financial conditions for renewing the license with Riot Games proved unacceptable. As a result, the decision was made to abandon the local ERL and notify Riot on October 21, 2024.
What's Next?
Many questions remain unresolved for the teams and players who now find themselves in a difficult situation during the offseason. Several organizations have already begun negotiations with Riot Games, seeking to acquire the license and revive the region.
