The oceans of Minecraft hide some of the game’s most valuable treasures. From abandoned shipwrecks and buried ruins to massive ocean monuments, there are plenty of reasons to dive beneath the surface. However, there’s one problem every player faces, your character can only hold their breath for a short time before taking drowning damage. This is why the Respiration enchantment was created. It was designed to modify helmets and allow users to explore the depths of oceans without the fear of running out of time.

Respiration Explained
Respiration is a helmet enchantment that enhances your ability to survive underwater. With it, you are able to stay underwater longer.
Players in Minecraft usually only have a mere 15 seconds to spend before their oxygen bubbles are gone. Luckily, this special enchantment allows you to expand that time. Each level provides you with an extra 15 seconds to breathe, allowing you to spend even more time underwater.
Here’s how the enchantment scales:
Level | Underwater Breathing Time |
No Respiration | 15 seconds |
Respiration I | 30 seconds |
Respiration II | 45 seconds |
Respiration III | 60 seconds |
With Respiration III, you can explore the ocean floor for an entire minute without needing to swim back up for air.
Respiration Also Helps You Survive Drowning
Most players believe that Respiration only extends your air supply, but there is an additional advantage to having the enchantment. Once you run out of air, the enchantment gives you a chance to avoid receiving drowning damage.
The chances improve the more levels you have:
- Respiration I: 50% chance to ignore drowning damage
- Respiration II: Around 67% chance
- Respiration III: 75% chance
While it doesn’t make you completely immune to drowning, those extra moments can save your life when you are trapped underwater or too far from the surface.

How to Get Respiration in Minecraft
There are many ways to add Respiration to your equipment:
- Use an enchantment table to enchant a helmet.
- Use an anvil to combine a helmet and Respiration enchanted book.
- Get Respiration books from Librarian villagers.
- Find enchanted books in loot chests placed around the world.
- Get enchanted gear from raid rewards in Minecraft Bedrock Edition.
As Respiration III can spawn from multiple sources, you'll mostly just have to wait a little and be lucky to get it.
What Is Respiration Best Used For?
Respiration shines whenever you plan to spend a lot of time underwater. It is especially useful for:
- Exploring shipwrecks and underwater ruins.
- Raiding ocean monuments.
- Collecting resources like coral, sponges, and sea lanterns.
- Mining blocks beneath lakes or oceans.
- Building underwater houses, tunnels, and secret bases.
Without Respiration, you constantly need to return to the surface. With it, underwater projects become far easier to manage.

Can You Use Respiration and Aqua Affinity Together?
Sure. While Respiration permits breathing underwater, Aqua Affinity allows underwater block mining at normal speed. A helmet with both enchantments is ideal for players who explore oceans and build underwater frequently.
At first, Respiration may seem like a simple enchantment. However, it is an absolute game changer when starting to explore the ocean in Minecraft. Having the ability to breathe longer and not drown while performing actions underwater makes this enchantment a necessary upgrade for all adventurers and builders.
