Search For The Needle: Cow vs Dog Pet — Which One to Buy First

Pets are now part of Search For The Needle, giving players a new way to collect and sell hay more efficiently. The first two pets are the Cow and Dog, and while both can speed up farming, they’re built for very different jobs.

The Dog focuses on movement speed and carrying capacity, while the Cow offers stronger grasp and easier selling. If you’re wondering which pet is worth getting first, the best choice mostly depends on your playstyle—especially whether you usually farm solo or clear hay with other players.

What's New in the Index + Pets Update

The Index + Pets update launched on September 12, 2026, introducing the pet system alongside the new Index feature.

For now there are currently two obtainable pets: Cow and Dog. Both help with the core hay-farming loop, but their stats and abilities are different enough to noticeably affect how you play. You can get both pets from the pet shop near the starting area.

The Index was added in the same update, giving players another progression feature to work through. However, its full list of entries and any potential completion rewards are still unclear.

How to Get Pets in Search For The Needle

You can buy both the Cow and the Dog from the pet shop near the spawn area in Search For The Needle. There’s no need to search the Farmhouse, Basement, or other locations—just head to the shop after loading into the game.

  • You can buy the Dog for 1,000 Gems and the Cow for 499 Robux in Search For The Needle.

Keep in mind that Search For The Needle is still receiving updates, so pet prices and currencies may change in future updates!

Cow Stats and Best Uses

The Cow currently has the following in-game stats:

Speed
Hay Value
Grasp
5.5
20
0%

Its biggest strength is Grasp. With 20 Grasp, the Cow can handle larger amounts of hay per collection action than the Dog, making it a useful companion when your priority is clearing the pile efficiently.

The Cow also has a useful behavioral advantage: it can eat large mouthfuls of hay and sell them without having to walk back to the trough. That cuts some movement out of the normal collection-and-selling cycle.

However, its 0% Hay Value stat means the Cow does not increase how much your hay sells for. You are improving collection convenience and grasp rather than receiving a direct selling-price multiplier.

Overall, the Cow is the more balanced pet. Its combination of respectable speed, high Grasp, and automatic selling makes it particularly useful when raw hay-clearing efficiency matters more than carrying a massive load at once.

Dog Stats and Best Uses

The Dog has a different stat spread:

Speed
Carry
Grasp
8
100
10

The standout bonus is 100 Carry. The Dog can fill its capacity with hay and run the load back to the trough, effectively acting as a mobile hauler while you continue working on the pile.

It is also considerably faster, with 8 Speed compared with the Cow's 5.5. That fits its role: instead of emphasizing how much hay it grabs at once, the Dog is designed around transporting collected hay efficiently.

The trade-off is its lower 10 Grasp, only half of the Cow's 20. Players looking strictly at clearing power may therefore prefer the Cow, but the Dog's combination of speed and 100 Carry makes it particularly valuable when repeated selling trips are slowing down your progress.

Which Pet Should You Buy First?

For most solo players, the Dog is the better first pet in Search For The Needle.

The biggest reason is its 100 Carry. It can move much more hay before another delivery is needed, while its 8 Speed helps it complete those trips quickly. When you're farming alone, cutting down on constant back-and-forth runs makes progression feel much smoother.

The Cow is a better pick if you care more about Grasp and clearing efficiency. Its 20 Grasp is double the Dog's, and it can sell collected hay without returning to the trough, giving it a useful bit of automation. Just keep in mind that its 0% Hay Value doesn't increase how much your hay sells for.

But the main difference is their price. You can buy the Dog for just 1,000 Gems, which you can earn by playing the game. The Cow, however, can only be purchased with the paid currency, costing 499 Robux, so not every player will be able or willing to get it.

For group farming, the Cow can be more useful. If other players are already helping with collection and transport, its higher Grasp lets you focus more on clearing the hay pile instead of maximizing your personal carrying capacity.

In short, buy the Dog first for solo farming and general progression. Go with the Cow if you usually play in a group or want stronger Grasp and easier hay clearing.
