Cons and pros of being a pro-player

The world of professional Counter-Strike is as exhilarating as it is challenging. For many, the dream of turning a passion for gaming into a lucrative career is enticing, but it comes with a unique set of pros and cons. To better understand these dynamics, we turn to insights from two top players: Johannes "tabseN" Wodarz, the longtime veteran and in-game leader (IGL) at BIG, and Rasmus "sjuush" Beck, a newer talent to tier 1 who plays for HEROIC and has already reached the final of a Major. Their experiences highlight both the rewards and the challenges of being a pro CS player.

Pros of being a pro CS player

1. Competition and personal Challenge

One of the most compelling aspects of being a pro CS player is the constant competition and the personal challenges it presents. TabseN, a well-known figure in the CS community, highlights this as the most rewarding part of his career. "If I weren't in CS, I'd be in something competitive," he says. "I love challenging myself to the limit and competing with others." This drive to compete and improve is a significant motivator for many players, pushing them to hone their skills and achieve their best.

2. Global Travel and Exposure

Another major benefit is the opportunity to travel the world. Professional players participate in tournaments and events across various countries, gaining exposure to different cultures and experiences. Sjuush points out the privilege of seeing the world as a significant perk of the job, despite the challenges it brings. This global travel not only enriches players' lives but also helps them build a worldwide fanbase and connect with diverse communities.

3. Financial Rewards

The financial incentives in professional CS can be substantial. Top players earn significant income from tournament winnings, sponsorships, and streaming. For instance, major tournaments like the ESL Pro League and IEM offer substantial prize pools, ensuring that successful players are well-compensated for their efforts. Additionally, sponsorship deals with major brands and streaming revenues provide ongoing financial support, offering long-term stability for top-tier players.

4. Fame and Recognition

Becoming a professional CS player often comes with a level of fame and recognition within the gaming community. Players are celebrated figures, enjoying the perks of celebrity status. This fame can lead to various opportunities, such as brand endorsements and personal projects, further enhancing their careers and personal lives.

5. Teamwork and Camaraderie

In the world of professional CS, teamwork is paramount. Players develop strong bonds with their teammates, learning the importance of collaboration and mutual support. The shared experiences of training, strategizing, and competing together foster a sense of camaraderie and loyalty that is unique to team-based esports. This aspect of professional gaming not only makes the journey enjoyable but also teaches valuable life skills in communication and teamwork.

For me best thing to be a CS pro is definitely competition. If i will be out of CS i will be in something competetive/ I want to compete with my life, compete with others, challenge my self to the limit, thats i like the most. Just be around the world, see around the world this is also a big privilege. But worst part is goes hand to hand be away from your family, friends, with the love one. You can't see for a months, when you travelling all the time and its a worst part.

Cons of Being a Pro CS Player

1. Extensive Travel and Time Away from Family

The extensive travel required to compete in international tournaments can be a significant drawback. Sjuush highlights this as a major con, stating, "You spend more time with your team than your actual family and girlfriend. So that can be hard." Being on the road for around 160 days or more each year can strain personal relationships and make maintaining a work-life balance challenging.

2. Physical and Mental Strain

The physical and mental demands of being a pro player are considerable. Long hours of practice, often exceeding eight hours a day, coupled with the stress of competition, can take a toll on players' health. The mental strain of performing at a high level consistently, dealing with losses, and managing the pressures of fame can lead to burnout and other mental health issues.

3. Inconsistent Income and Job Security

While top players can earn substantial income, the esports industry can be volatile. Sponsorship deals, tournament winnings, and team contracts can be inconsistent, making financial stability a concern for some players. Additionally, the lifespan of a professional gamer can be relatively short, and transitioning to a different career after retiring from competitive play can be challenging.

4. High Expectations and Pressure

The expectations placed on professional players can be immense. Fans, sponsors, and teams expect consistent high-level performance, which can be overwhelming. TabseN mentions the constant pressure to perform and compete at the highest level as both a pro and a con. The fear of underperforming and facing criticism can be daunting for many players.

5. Limited Personal Time

The rigorous schedule of a pro player leaves little time for personal pursuits and relaxation. The need to constantly practice, travel, and compete can limit opportunities to pursue hobbies, spend time with loved ones, or simply relax. This lack of personal time can contribute to stress and a sense of isolation.

I think the biggest con is probably the travel. You travel so much, you spend more time with your team than your actual family and girlfriend. So that can be hard. So you have to kind of accept that lifestyle if you want to get into gaming because you are travelling around 160 days, if not even more, every single year. I think I've done that for the past five years. So it is hard mentally to do that, but you can't have to accept it.

Balancing the Pros and Cons

Despite the challenges, many professional CS players find ways to balance the pros and cons of their careers. Effective time management, mental health support, and strong support systems from family, friends, and team organizations play crucial roles in maintaining well-being. Players often emphasize the importance of self-care, staying connected with loved ones, and setting boundaries to manage the demands of their profession.

Conclusion

Being a professional CS player comes with its unique set of advantages and disadvantages. The thrill of competition, financial rewards, and global exposure make it an attractive career choice for many. However, the extensive travel, physical and mental strain, and high expectations present significant challenges. Understanding and managing these pros and cons is essential for players to sustain long and successful careers in the competitive world of Counter-Strike. For those who can strike the right balance, the rewards of being a pro CS player can be immensely fulfilling and impactful.
