That one CS:GO patch completely "reanimated" the beloved game for good

Valve regularly releases updates for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but has anyone considered which patch was the most important one in the history of the shooter? In this article, we will tell you exactly about the update.

When was the most important update in CS:GO released?

On September 15, 2015, Valve released a patch “Reanimated” that became the most important one throughout the history of the shooter. Developers completely reworked the gameplay by changing hitboxes, player model animations, and weapons, in such a way they added more realistic fluency to CS:GO.

What changes did the patch bring?

This update almost completely changed everything that was happening on CS:GO servers. First of all, it is worth noting the absolute change in animations, as well as the overall skeleton of player models. The developers left nothing of the old models, simply wiping and rolling out new ones. The entire geometry and animation of the frame was reworked, and new player model states were added.

Besides this, the hitboxes in CS:GO received a significant rework. A hitbox is a system for detecting hits in the game. Each hitbox corresponds to a specific body part, such as the head, which affects the damage from a shot. Prior to this patch, hitboxes were represented as boxes, causing them to extend beyond the real player model. Using capsules, the developers managed to practically completely incorporate the hitboxes within the model.

In the past, Valve tried to improve the hitbox system using boxes, but was dissatisfied with the result. This is why the developers tried to rework the hitbox construction. In sub-patches, minor edits were made to the capsule-based system, but the update from September 15, 2015 remains as the basic one.

Since the patch was released, there was a problem with the head hitboxes for different agent models in CS:GO. Each model faction has an individual hitbox. In some cases, the difference in hitboxes of the models reaches 16.75%. Skins from “The Professionals” (Terrorists) line have the smallest head hitbox, and SAS (Counter-Terrorists) have the largest ones.

With the update, all weapon animations were replaced. A bug with some weapon models was fixed, so players were no longer able to see the device or a piece of it through walls and thin barriers.

Valve also added or changed many other animations that do not affect gameplay but make it more realistic: vertical weapon matrices, weapon lift animation, movement physics and silencer position, player model body physics, and interaction physics with other models, and bomb defusal cable.

How to enable the hitbox visibility?

To activate the display of hitboxes in CS:GO, you need to type the command "sv_showlagcompensation 1" in the console. After that, the hitboxes of the agents' models will be visible. To disable the command, simply change the 1 to 0.

Updates for CS:GO were released before and after this patch, but it was this one update that made Valve's shooter appear the way we know it today. The only thing that could surpass the importance of this update is the move of the game to the Source 2 engine. Rumors about it have been going on for several years, but in reality, there are no major changes. We just have to wait.
