Monte’s and B8’s players broke the law to represent Ukraine at the Major: a trip to EPL S18 is questionable

Six Ukrainian professional CS:GO players were on the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine list, with athletes who didn’t return from abroad. Among them were the participants of the Major and RMR from B8 and Monte. Some esports figures from Ukraine are already predicting future difficulties for players to go to LANs.

Among others, the list included the following Ukrainian athletes:

Monte explained in an official statement that according to the resolution, the Ukrainian members of the team were supposed to return on April 16. Still, the team qualified for the Major after RMR, so the team decided to continue preparing for the tournament while staying abroad. Woro2k and DemQQ returned to Ukraine on May 21, immediately after the end of the Major, and crossed the border on May 22. As for sdy, his return was delayed due to force majeure.

The club asked for forgiveness from the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, reminded that the club's players repeatedly reminded about the war in Ukraine and engaged in gatherings supporting the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The LMBT trainer explained that the return date is conditional and may be extended due to unforeseen circumstances. However, the future of the team remains questionable.

B8, in turn, did not comment on the incident on their social networks at the time of publication.

Consequences for players

In the future, getting an exit permit will likely be more challenging due to failure to return to the country on time. Or you will have to go through the thresholds of the relevant ministry for a long time. There is no talk of any fines yet, as the mechanism itself still needs to be worked out.

It's awful. But Monte's decision is understandable: if the players had returned after RMR, they, like LMBT, would not have received a new permit and would not have played at the Major. But this puts an end to future requests... Either it needs to be explained in more detail.

It is worth mentioning that Monte qualified for the ESL Pro League Season 18, which starts at the end of August. Taking into account the fact that players from the Russian Federation will take part in it, the chances of departure become even smaller because, according to the decree of the Ministry, participants of official delegations of Ukraine are prohibited from taking part in sports events at which representatives of the Russian Federation and/or the Republic of Belarus perform.

Ukrainian analyst Oleksandr Petr1k Petryk proposed to contact ESL so that Monte would not be sent to the same group as the Russians so that the team would have a chance to leave and perform at least in the initial stage of the tournament.

I'm sure that sending Monte to a group where there will be no Russians is not a problem. It will be more challenging to separate them in the playoffs, but it is possible until the 2-3 stage. Yes, you need to adjust the format. This is a difficult path. Easier to issue an invite to someone else instead of Monte, right?
In short, I believe that we will have to fight for Monte on social networks in August.

In the worst-case scenario, only NAVI, whose players were abroad before the start of Russia's invasion in 2022, will represent Ukraine at esports tournaments. Monte, B8, or IKLA may be destined to perform exclusively online or on small 2 LANs without Russians or Belarusians.
