Kelden "Boostio" Pupello, the captain of the championship-winning Evil Geniuses squad, shared detailed information about the team's substitute roster during an interview published on interviewer Sean Gare's official channel.
They were a full-fledged team. While they couldn't compete in tournaments, they did everything that teams usually do: reviewing demos, practicing, and so on.
Kelden "Boostio" Pupello revealed that the substitute roster, although unable to participate in competitions, still performed regular duties for a professional team, such as training, video analysis, and error correction. Regarding the restriction on tournament participation, this rule is set by Riot Games themselves to avoid potential conflicts of interest and fraud at tournaments when one organization fields two teams.
If we needed a practice day, they would cancel all their plans and play against us with the picks we thought our opponents would use. They studied their defaults and strategies and simulated them against us. It's the kind of preparation that no other team had access to. Where else will you find someone who would go to point B on the Pearl map as Phoenix for eight rounds in a row and engage with me, replicating the actions of 🇸🇬 Jinggg? Without a substitute roster, this would be impossible.
In addition to their own training, the substitute roster, according to Kelden "Boostio" Pupello, would assist the main roster by simulating agent choices and actions of other professional teams that Evil Geniuses could face in tournaments.
It's worth noting that the Evil Geniuses management decided to disband the substitute roster due to financial difficulties, leaving only one player, Kyle "ScrewFace" Jensen. We covered this in more detail in another article.
