The new pause tablet introduced at IEM Cologne Major has already spawned a metagame among coaches, and STYKO has gone public with exactly how it works.
The Mind Game
Because coaches can see each other approaching the tablet, some have started deliberately waiting during freeze time, hoping the opposing coach commits to a timeout first. STYKO confirmed two coaches from the Major told him they used this tactic on the very first day: A couple of coaches have already figured out how to use the pause tablet to their advantage. They can see if another coach is approaching the tablet, so they wait during freeze time, thinking the opponent's coach will take the pause instead.
/script>there is already hidden coach meta evolving around that. Other coach can spot if other coach is coming close to the tablet to delay his own pause if he thinks opponents coach will take the pause instead. I got this “strat” verified from two coaches that smartly used it today

The Tablet Makes It Worse
Finnish coach t0mbbaa noted this behavior predates the tablet entirely. Coaches have always watched each other during freeze time and waited the first ten seconds to see who blinks first. The tablet just makes the intent more obvious and readable. When a coach physically moves toward the button, it signals a pause is coming far more clearly than the old system of signaling an admin.

The Last-Second Window
STYKO added a crucial detail that makes the tablet uniquely exploitable compared to the old system. Previously, waiting too long meant the in-game vote might not finish in time and the timeout would roll to the next round. With the tablet, the pause triggers instantly with no voting process. "Technically you can wait until the very last second," STYKO said. A feature designed to make pauses faster and cleaner has inadvertently created a new layer of psychological chess between coaching staffs.
