Hunter Schafer, who has starred in Euphoria and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, has been named as a contender for the part of Princess Zelda in the live-action adaptation of the Legend of Zelda, according to reports.
This was relayed by industry tipster Daniel Richtman, who quotes Schafer as "being eyed" for the role, meaning Schafer is one of a pool of candidates in the mix at the studio, although no offer has been made yet.
The rumors have sparked considerable excitement among fans, many of whom believe Schafer is a great choice for the iconic role thanks to her ethereal appearance and acting talent. Schafer herself previously expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of playing Zelda, stating in a 2023 interview:
"That would be really cool. I personally love the game. I played it as a kid and still play it today. Who knows! It would be awesome."
The live-action version of the Legend of Zelda film will be developed by Nintendo in association with Sony Pictures. It will be written and directed by Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes). Legendary Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto and experienced superhero film producer Avi Arad will be the producers.
Additionally, the production team will be joined by writer/director Wes Ball and his collaborator, Joe Hartwick Jr. through their company Oddball Entertainment. The global release of the film will be on March 26, 2026. There have not been any official casting announcements as of yet. Although Schafer has not joined the project officially, the fact that her name was among the possible candidates has sparked interest in the forthcoming project.
