Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy Resonance during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct. The company scheduled the turn based role playing game to release on October 22. The title launches across PlayStation and Xbox alongside PC and both Nintendo Switch consoles. The development team adapted the Season 1 story from Brave Exvius. They completely rebuilt the combat and exploration systems to deliver a full console experience.
Announcement And Release Date
Square Enix introduced Final Fantasy Resonance during the June Nintendo Direct to position the title as a fresh entry in the franchise while the reveal trailer presented pixel art characters operating within detailed three dimensional environments featuring modern visual effects.

The game officially launches on October 22 across all major platforms and Square Enix confirmed this project operates as a completely new experience rather than a direct port of the mobile title. The developers use the original Season 1 story as a base narrative foundation while adding fresh content and restructuring the entire progression loop to support a traditional console role playing game.
Combat System And Battle Structure
Final Fantasy Resonance officially removes the Active Time Battle system and implements a traditional turn order displayed clearly at the top of the screen to keep combat focused heavily on strategic planning. Enemies feature a specific stagger mechanic that drastically increases incoming damage when players successfully exploit various elemental weaknesses during combat encounters.

Elemental coverage plays a central role in party building because players must balance their teams to respond perfectly to different enemy types and maximize those stagger opportunities. Successfully staggering enemies provides immediate access to additional combat advantages that completely shift the flow of battle in favor of the player.

Visions System and Guest Characters
A key system in Resonance is Visions. Players equip Visions to party members in a structure similar to a job system. Each Vision grants abilities and levels up independently as it is used in combat.

Visions include both original characters and iconic figures from across the Final Fantasy series. Confirmed guest Visions include Warrior of Light from Final Fantasy I, Terra from Final Fantasy VI, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, Zidane from Final Fantasy IX, Shantotto from Final Fantasy XI, and Y’shtola from Final Fantasy XIV.
When enemies are staggered, players can trigger combined Vision attacks that deal high damage or provide support effects. These mechanics turn battles into chain reactions where correct setup leads to rapid momentum shifts.
World Exploration, Espers, and Shrines
The game features a full overworld with multiple continents, towns, chocobos, and airships. Players explore classic RPG locations and travel between regions while progressing through the main story.

Optional dungeons contain Espers, which only Fina can summon in battle. Espers such as Siren and Ramuh are unlocked through exploration and boss fights in hidden areas, encouraging players to fully explore the world.
Visions also appear in overworld shrines. These locations present story sequences tied to characters from across the Final Fantasy series. Players unlock Visions by progressing through these sequences and answering story-related questions connected to the original games.
Story and Main Characters
The story follows Rain, a knight from the Kingdom of Grandshelt. He travels with his companions Lasswell, Lid, and Fina as they protect the world’s magic crystals and face threats connected to the Veritas of the Dark.
Each companion has a defined role. Lasswell serves as Rain’s close ally and combat partner. Lid focuses on engineering and invention, following a legacy inspired by Cid. Fina acts as a summoner with lost memories and plays a central role in unlocking Espers.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius ran for nearly a decade before shutting down in 2025. Final Fantasy Resonance reuses its Season 1 narrative structure but rebuilds it as a standalone console RPG with new systems, content, and presentation. Square Enix continues expanding its HD-2D approach across multiple projects. Final Fantasy Resonance becomes the first mainline Final Fantasy project to fully adopt this visual style alongside a return to traditional turn-based combat.
