How to Get the Grappling Hook in Valheim 1.0

The Grappling Hook is one of the most useful traversal tools added in Valheim 1.0. To craft it, you need 1 Hook, 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Refined Eitr, and 4 Mandibles, and the recipe is made at a Black Forge. The important part is finding the Hook first: it comes from Dvergr Treasure Chests inside Infested Mines in the Mistlands, and picking one up is what unlocks the Grappling Hook recipe.

The valheim grappling hook crafting recipe requires:

  • 1 Hook
  • 10 Yggdrasil Wood
  • 10 Refined Eitr
  • 4 Mandibles

Take all of these materials to a Black Forge to craft the Grappling Hook. The Hook is the important part of the recipe because it also unlocks the crafting recipe when you pick it up.

Where to Find the Hook in Infested Mines

The Hook is the most important part of the process because it cannot be crafted. You have to find it while exploring Infested Mines, the large dungeons located throughout the Mistlands.

The Hook is not a guaranteed item in every Infested Mine. It can appear in Dvergr Treasure Chests, including chests found in hidden sections of the dungeon. Because of this, clearing one mine does not guarantee that you will get the item. If you search an Infested Mine thoroughly and do not find a Hook, move on to another one.

When exploring an Infested Mine, pay particular attention to unusual sections of the dungeon. Hidden rooms can be located behind small stone doors decorated with glowing blue symbols or glyphs. These areas can contain valuable treasure chests, including the chest with the Hook.

The important thing to remember about the Valheim hook Infested Mine search is that you are looking for a dungeon chest, not a special enemy. Killing more Seekers will not make the Hook drop.

You also do not need multiple Hooks for the first Grappling Hook. One is enough to unlock the recipe and craft the tool. Additional Hooks can be useful if you want to make more Grappling Hooks for yourself or other players.

Crafting Materials and Where to Get Them

Once you have the Hook, you need three more resources. All of them are available through Mistlands progression, so you do not need to enter the Deep North to gather the complete recipe.

Yggdrasil Wood

You need 10 Yggdrasil Wood.

Yggdrasil Wood comes from the large Yggdrasil trees found throughout the Mistlands. You need an appropriate axe, with a Blackmetal Axe being sufficient to harvest this resource.

If you have already spent time building Mistlands equipment and gathering materials, this should be one of the easiest parts of the recipe.

Refined Eitr

The recipe requires 10 Refined Eitr.

Refined Eitr is produced using an Eitr Refinery. The refinery processes Sap and Soft Tissue into Refined Eitr. Sap comes from Ancient Roots using Sap Extractors, while Soft Tissue can be obtained from Mistlands sources such as giant skulls and other locations containing the material.

If you have already progressed far enough into Mistlands crafting to build magical equipment, you should already have access to the infrastructure needed for Refined Eitr.

Mandibles

The final material is 4 Mandibles.

Mandibles are obtained from Seeker Soldiers in the Mistlands. These are the larger and more dangerous versions of the normal Seekers, so be prepared for a tougher fight when farming this resource.

Four Mandibles are required, so you only need to defeat enough Seeker Soldiers to collect that amount.

You Do Not Need Deep North Resources

All four ingredients for the Grappling Hook come from the Mistlands progression:

  • 1 Hook — Dvergr Treasure Chests in Infested Mines
  • 10 Yggdrasil Wood — Yggdrasil trees in the Mistlands
  • 10 Refined Eitr — Eitr Refinery
  • 4 Mandibles — Seeker Soldiers

That means you can fully craft the Grappling Hook before entering the Deep North.

How to Craft the Grappling Hook

After finding the Hook and collecting all the other materials, crafting the tool is simple.

  1. Find a Hook in a Dvergr Treasure Chest inside an Infested Mine.
  2. Pick it up to unlock the Grappling Hook recipe.
  3. Collect 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Refined Eitr, and 4 Mandibles.
  4. Open a Black Forge.
  5. Place the required materials into the crafting interface.
  6. Craft the Grappling Hook.

Make sure you use the Black Forge, not the standard Forge. The Grappling Hook is part of the Mistlands-era crafting progression.

How to Use the Grappling Hook

The Grappling Hook occupies both hands, so you cannot use a weapon or shield at the same time. Aim at a suitable wall, cliff, structure, or other surface and use the attack button to prepare and fire the hook.

On the default PC controls:

  • Left Mouse Button — prepare and fire the Grappling Hook
  • Space — reel yourself toward the anchor point
  • Right Mouse Button — release the hook

There is a short delay while the hook is being prepared, so do not wait until the last second before using it during a fall or emergency.

The Grappling Hook is not a traditional swinging hook. You attach it to a surface, hang from the line, and use the jump button to pull yourself toward the anchor. This makes it especially useful for vertical movement rather than long horizontal swings.

The tool also has unlimited uses without consuming a resource for every shot, making it suitable for repeated exploration. You should still watch your stamina and remember that fall damage is not automatically removed just because you are using the hook.

Where the Grappling Hook Is Useful

The Grappling Hook is already helpful in the Mistlands, where steep cliffs and uneven terrain can turn a short journey into a long climb.

Its value increases considerably in the Deep North. You can use it to:

  • climb steep cliffs;
  • reach elevated platforms;
  • cross difficult vertical sections;
  • recover from awkward drops;
  • navigate multi-level dungeons;
  • reach high entrances to Deep North structures.

One of its most important uses is the Gates of Mörkhalla. These enormous structures do not have a convenient ground-level entrance. The intended approach is to reach an elevated section of the structure and then work your way inside. The Grappling Hook is specifically useful for reaching this raised entrance.

Once inside Mörkhalla, the hook remains useful for navigating the vertical dungeon layout and dealing with gaps and broken sections.

Should You Craft It Before Entering Deep North?

Yes. You should craft the Grappling Hook before seriously exploring the Deep North.

The main reason is simple: every material required for the tool is already available in the Mistlands. There is no reason to wait until you are in the final biome to obtain it.

More importantly, the Grappling Hook becomes extremely valuable at the Gates of Mörkhalla. Their elevated entrance is designed around vertical traversal, and the Grappling Hook is the easiest way to reach it. Without the tool, you would have to rely on alternative construction or traversal methods, which makes the approach much more awkward.

So if you have already completed most of your Mistlands progression, take the time to find a Hook and craft the tool before sailing north. It takes only one trip to a suitable Infested Mine and gives you a permanent mobility option for the rest of your Valheim 1.0 adventure.
